SBS congratulates DNA Songs and Dami Im as Sound of Silence wins best original composition at Eurovision 2016

SBS today congratulated DNA Songs, the creators of Dami Ims Eurovision hit Sound of Silence, who have been recognised for the best and most original composition at Eurovisions annual Marcel Bezen on Awards.

On Sunday, Australian composers David Musumeci and Anthony Egizi, the founders of song writing and production company DNA Songs, were awarded the coveted Composer Award at the Marcel Bezen on Awards, which are held after the Song Contest each year.

The Marcel Bezen on Awards were introduced in 2002 to honour the best competing songs in the Eurovision Grand Final. Named after the creator of the annual contest, the awards are divided into three categories, including the Composer Award, which is determined by a jury made up of the participating composers. The remaining two categories include the Press Award, which is for the best entry as voted by the accredited media at the event, and the Artistic Award, presented to the best artist as voted by the commentators.

SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said, This is a truly special prize for the best song at Eurovision, as voted by the composers from this years 43 competing countries, and SBS is absolutely thrilled for DNA and Dami to have been recognised by this expert group of global music industry representatives. DNA are amongst the biggest hit-makers in the country, writing songs for the likes of Delta Goodrem, Ricky Martin and Jessica Mauboy, and it is fantastic to see their composition Sound of Silence not only performed on the worlds biggest stage, but awarded this prestigious prize, while also reaching number one in Australia and charting around the world.

Between Dami Im, as our fantastic artist, as well as her representatives and the talented composers, the SBS Eurovision team truly embodied Australias diversity. Supporting Dami in the green room during the competition was a group of Australians with origins as far-ranging as Korea, Vietnam, Italy, England, Ireland and Denmark. Eurovision is all about uniting communities and exploring cultures through music, so it was wonderful to see such a diverse Australian team recognised with this award.

Dami Im performed her song Sound of Silence in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final to a packed arena in Stockholm, Sweden, and worldwide viewing audience of an estimated 200 million, placing second overall.

Damis single Sound of Silence is charting in over 38 countries on the iTunes charts, including #1 in Australia, and is also charting in 14 countries on Spotify
