DISCOP and Nick Wilson to expand The Animation Lounge in 2017 --

DISCOP Abidjan and Johannesburg are the leading television content markets in Francophone and Anglophone Africa respectively. It is estimated that over $1 billion worth of broadcasting business was concluded at these events in 2016.

It is with the continued growth of the African broadcast industry in mind that DISCOP and its organisers Basic Lead partnered with Animation South Africa at DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 to create the first ever animation-centric pavilion in its history - The Animation Lounge.

Subsequently, discussions between various partners including TURNER Kids, the Annecy International Animation Festival (MIFA), Animation Magazine, The Animation School and Digital Lab Africa led to the DISCOP Johannesburg Animation Lounge.

Additionally, as the leader in kid s TV broadcasting in Africa, TURNER Kids also announced their intention to expand its animation distribution, broadcasting and creation in Africa by sponsoring the TURNER Kids Animation Pitching Competition at DISCOP Johannesburg 2016.

The stakes were high, with MIFA accreditation, an Animation Magazine subscription and, of course, the substantial cash prizes of $2 000 for the winner and $1 000 for the runner-up, sponsored by TURNER. At the end of the tense competition the judging panel comprising Ariane Suveg (Turner), Nick Wilson (ASA), Luxury Msiza (etv), Renee Williams (SABC) and Serge Noukoue (Cote Ouest) selected Cloud Life of Punch Monkey Studios as the winner with Hatch of Zeropoint Studios the runner-up.

The event was a massive success, as Nick Wilson, chair of the Export Missions Committee of ASA and coordinator of The Animation Lounge explains, DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 was a landmark for the African animation industry. We had more than 50 animation professionals in attendance, an increase of 200% on last year s event and, for the first time, 20 students were in attendance.

DISCOP s Patrick Zuchowicki explains further: Our partnership with Animation South Africa to create The Animation Lounge at DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 was one of the highlights of the event. The increase in attendance speaks for itself and the feedback that we received from participants and partners of The Animation Lounge was excellent. It thus gives me great pleasure in announcing that we will continue our partnership with Nick Wilson to coordinate The Animation Lounge for DISCOP Abidjen and Johannesburg in 2017. One of the aims of this endeavour will be to bridge the gap between the Francophone and Anglophone African animation industries in 2017 with more African and global players in attendance.
