RT is today releasing its Annual Report and Group Consolidated Financial Statements for the Year Ended 31st December 2017.
With overall 2017 revenues at the same level as 2016, but assisted through reduced operating costs, RT returned a lower operating Net Deficit, before exceptional items and tax, of 6.4m in 2017 (2016 Net Deficit before tax of 19.4 million).
There were a number of exceptional items for the organisation in 2017. RT recorded an overall Net Surplus for the year of 42.1 million (2016 Net Deficit of 19.7 million), including a net gain after tax of 78.5 million from the sale of part of the Donnybrook site, less sales-enabling project costs, and after a restructuring charge of 29.6 million.
The Annual Report also highlights RT 's many achievements in 2017, including:
RT One and RT 2 delivered all of the top 20 most-watched programmes in Ireland
More than 1,300,000 viewers tuned into the The Late Late Toy Show
RT News kept the nation informed with live transmissions throughout Storm Ophelia
RT Investigates produced a number of high-impact programmes on those living on hospital waiting lists, and those stuck in substandard rental accommodation
RT Player delivered 51.5million streams, up 2% on 2016
RT launched a dedicated Irish-language website, www.rte.ie/gaeilge
Over 1,000,000 people tuned into RT Radio 1 each week
The RT Concert Orchestra and 2fm presented seven sell-out dance music concerts
RT Archives attracted a record number of online visitors, with 3.1 million compared to 1.9 million in 2016.
Dee Forbes, Director-General RT , said: "RT experienced a year of very significant change in 2017. It was the beginning of a period of transformation that will run over the next few years. Against a difficult financial backdrop, RT introduced a radically new organisational structure; reduced the size of its workforce; developed a new five-year strategy (2018-2022); and managed the sale of more than 8 acres of land at its Donnybrook site all while continuing to deliver a breadth of compelling programming and content for audiences every day".
She added: "If RT is to return to a sustainable financial footing, meaningful Government action on reforming the licence fee system is essential. The current system is losing more than 50 million every year. Not only is this unfair on the majority that pay their TV Licence fee, it is also limiting the potential of the whole independent production sector. Without action there will be far-reaching consequences for our journalism, for national cultural and creative expression, and for employment in the broader media sector."
Moya Doherty, Chair of the RT Board, commented: "RT is re-imagining itself for the 21st century and will continue to build for the future through appropriate collaboration and partnerships. The development of the independent production sector and the creation of relevant content reflecting the changing needs and aspirations of the Irish nation are equally important ambitions for the organisation. Working with key stakeholders to develop a sustainable funding model for public media in these dynamic times remains the central challenge for this re-imagined RT ."
