Registration is open for the second edition of the Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress (NEWF) which will take place at the Durban Botanic Gardens from 16 to 18 July 2018.

The Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress is designed for passionate filmmakers around the world to forge new relationships, build on those already formed, innovate and move towards further development in natural history and conservation content creation, using Africa as the key landmark, explains Noel Kok, founder and programme director of NEWF.

Together we inspire African filmmakers to bring life to their stories, the celebrations, binding connections and plight of our nature, environment and wildlife and ultimately distribute these stories to film festivals and broadcasters world over, he said.

For three days, NEWF creates a path to conservation through film by providing a platform for delegates to engage, network and contribute to the industry. NEWF 2018 offers topics to inspire story and spark lively and robust debate, informative panel sessions, case studies and interactive demonstrations. An array of keynote speakers, industry leaders and special guests have been invited, whose details will be announced in due course.

NEWF is positioning itself as Africa's premiere destination for the convergence of nature, environment, wildlife and adventure conservation filmmakers, scientists, conservationists and broadcast media.

Currently, the South African Film and Television industry has a number of festivals, markets and awards which develop and support content-creators, but none holistically cover the specialist and yet diverse value chain of the nature, environment and wildlife content or specifically respond to the growth and transformation challenges within this segment of the industry. In order to respond to these challenges the Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress and its associated programmes was born, explained Kok.

One of its key areas of focus is the NEWF Development Fund a programme designed to fund the production of documentary shorts to kick-start the next generation of nature, environment, wildlife and adventure filmmakers and will host the N.E.W Pitch Competition during the congress. NEWF is also designing a mobile pop up cinema programme, which will run throughout the year, targeted at local community film focus groups creating an awareness of the natural world, its challenges and unlocking African perspectives.
