FIFA World Cup 2026: The Firsts, Breakthroughs, and Lasting Legacies

21/07/2026

With winners Spain having already paraded the World Cup trophy through Madrid in front of millions of fans and the dust now settling on an epic tournament of three host countries, 16 venues, 48 teams and 104 matches, SVG Europe looks back at the production innovations, technical firsts and operational shifts that defined the FIFA World Cup 2026.

A record-scale final production HBS expanded its coverage of the final between Spain and Argentina to a 60-plus camera plan with beefed-up replay and aerial coverage, spanning the opening ceremony, half-time show and multi-city elements. Across the match, ceremonies, half-time show, and other supporting productions, more than 125 cameras operated inside and around the stadium on Sunday (19 June). HBS's core match production featured 60 cameras and 57 microphones, supported by 54 replay record trains and 14 additional channels serving the tournament's multiple feeds. The line-up included multiple super-slo-mos, crane cams behind each net, Spidercam, multiple drones, a helicopter and pitch-side Steadicams.

Decentralised production becomes the blueprint FIFA and HBS ran 16 independent production teams across 16 venues for the first time, an approach that has been tipped to become the tournament's lasting operational legacy. Each of the 16 stadiums had a dedicated production team for the group stage led by the producer and director and where the main match coverage will be produced, FIFA and HBS had 12,000 square metres of multilateral production areas within the IBC that played a crucial role. Plus, the replay, audio mixing, graphics, and shading operations for every match were managed by operators in Dallas, not at the stadium.

Rightsholders go fully at-home With the geography making OB vans unworkable, rightsholders remade their operations around remote production. NOS and RTBF shared a single IBC footprint, splitting HBS connections with barely three staff on site, while ARD and ZDF fielded no OB vans at all - four-person venue kits on LiveU feeding Mainz and Cologne. Deutsche Telekom's MagentaTV produced almost entirely from Munich via TV Skyline, thinXpool and DMC. Both UK rightsholders, BBC and ITV, followed suit: ITV kept its vision-mixer frame in London with only the panel in Brooklyn, cutting travelling headcount to roughly 40%, while the the BBC ran a 15-strong Dallas IBC team feeding Salford over a 20Gbps backbone.

HBS opts for remote, London-based non-live hub In another first, a remote facility in London handled non-live content and rights-holder support, showing how host broadcast operations can be split across continents. The 400-person hub worked across a mix of formats and content ranging from short-form social clips and TikTok-specific cuts to longer highlights packages. The set-up allowed the bulk of post-production and content processing to take place overseas, alongside a media-management operation that served as a central nervous system for content sent from host cities across the US, Canada and Mexico.

The creator-economy World Cup From the FIFA-YouTube deal for live matches and creator access to HBS formally embracing influencers within the host broadcast operation, this was the first World Cup to treat digital creators as part of the production plan. Speaking about the digital-first content side of the operation, HBS director of digital Johannes Franken described collaborating with influencers as probably the biggest shift we see.

The studio dilemma: Stay at home or head to the States?

ITV's New York studio [Credit: Steve Fuller, www.gingercatstudios.co.uk]For UK viewers, one of the earliest contests of the tournament began before a ball was even kicked. The BBC and ITV, despite sharing rights, opted for very different approaches to presentation. The BBC chose to stay in Salford until the latter stages, in a striking set that used extended reality and LED volume technology to bring the North American tournament to UK audiences. ITV, meanwhile, based itself for the duration in a studio beside Brooklyn Bridge, pairing stunning views of the bridge and the Statue of Liberty with virtual production, augmented reality and remote workflows. For all their differences, both showed that blend of technology deployed to striking effect.

Broadcasters make AR their point of difference Working from a shared HBS world feed, Europe's domestic broadcasters turned to augmented reality to differentiate their own coverage, with Norway's NRK and Austria's ORF using bespoke, in-house toolsets to do it. NRK repurposed its extended-reality studio that was built for the Winter Olympics, while ORF rebuilt its main studio at the ORF Centre in Vienna.

Ref cam's World Cup debut Referee-mounted cameras delivered first-person perspectives at every match - a World Cup first - and provided some memorable views of goals. No audio was used during live matches, but it was available on highlights carried by broadcasters and FIFA's own YouTube channel, offering a glimpse
