With Boland Monitors, NEPs PGA TOUR Unit Ready for Future

When NEP designed one of its largest recurring mobile production unit fleets for PGA TOUR

coverage, the leading media services provider faced a familiar challenge: creating a monitoring

environment that would deliver uncompromising image quality while surviving the realities of

life on the road.

The nine-trailer production unit supports weekly PGA TOUR events across the country, with

responsibilities split between traditional network broadcasts and the TOUR's own productions,

including ESPN+ REMI workflows.

The production control area features a large monitor wall comprised of 29 Boland 31-inch

OLED HDR displays. According to Dan Turk, CTO of NEP Americas, creating a monitor wall

of this scale required more than selecting displays with excellent image quality. Each monitor

had to perform flawlessly on its own while matching every other display in the wall.

We needed monitors that could deliver accurate, repeatable performance every week while

standing up to the demands of a mobile production environment, says Turk. These mobile units

travel thousands of miles each year, and that kind of constant movement is something many

displays simply aren't designed to handle.

One advantage of the Boland displays was the confidence they provided immediately

after installation.The monitor wall serves as the production team's primary visual reference, making color

consistency across all displays essential. Even small calibration differences can become

distractions during a live production where operators must make immediate decisions.

Not every display manufacturer understands what live production teams expect from

professional monitoring, adds Turk. When you're building a large tiled monitor wall,

calibration and consistency are critical. The last thing you want is a wall where monitors look

slightly different or require extensive tuning before you can put them into service.

Turk says one advantage of the Boland displays was the confidence they provided immediately

after installation.

We were able to take them out of the box, install them, and trust that the images would be

correct, he adds. That saves time, but more importantly, it builds confidence with operators

who rely on those displays during live broadcasts.

HDR performance also played an important role in the decision. With support for the Rec. 2020

color space and 1000-nit HDR capability, the monitors provide production personnel with an

accurate representation of HDR content rather than requiring operators to estimate how signals

will appear farther down the production chain.

In live sports production, reliability and consistency are paramount, Turk says. We don't have

the luxury of fixing things later. That's why confidence in monitoring is so important.

Beyond image quality, the installation required practical engineering solutions tailored to mobile

production. Broadcast trucks face severe space constraints driven by both vehicle dimensions

and DOT regulations, while equipment must also withstand years of vibration on the road as the

truck moves from venue to venue.

Boland worked closely with NEP to address both challenges through custom metal mounting

solutions that ruggedize the displays while minimizing bezel spacing to create a nearly seamless

monitor wall.

Working with Boland goes beyond selecting products from a catalog, Turk says. It's a

collaboration with people who understand broadcast engineering and the challenges our

customers face every day in the field.

The success of the PGA TOUR installation is already influencing future NEP builds. The

company is currently deploying a similar large-scale monitoring environment in a new

production unit supporting Turner's NASCAR coverage, this time incorporating Boland's latest

QD OLED display technology to further enhance HDR performance.
