GUGU ZUMA-NCUBE: I ACTED IN A VAGINA MONOLOGUE' The Stained Glass TV co-creator and former Isidingo actress Gugu Zuma-Ncube tells True Love Magazine that it's hard for people to separate her business from her political parents Jacob Zuma and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. She also reveals she's always known she wants to be an actress.

Even during my first year of the LLB programme, I had acted in The Vagina Monologues play at The Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town, that my friends had put together. My younger sister, Thuli, had always wanted to be an actress her whole life so I'd tag along whenever she was in Cape Town to attend the AFDA Open Days. The acting classes felt like oxygen to me and reaffirmed that I was at the right place, and doing the right thing, she adds.

Look, I have famous parents and they are who they are. I don't really know if I have answered the question, within myself, of whether I'm able to block out the noise and just concentrate on what I need to do. People find it difficult to separate my parents from what I do. But, it isn't fruitful to focus on people's perceptions of my parents - something that I, essentially, can't change.

A DAY IN A LIFE OF STAINED GLASS TV PRODUCER' According to True Love Magazine, Gugu Zuma-Ncube's life involves travelling between Joburg and Durban (the Uzalo writing team is based in the former), attending writing workshops, doing episode viewings of Uzalo and other productions or developing new TV show concepts to pitch to broadcasters.

No one day is ever the same. When we have more than one show in production it does get really hectic, she clarifies.

Zuma-Ncube adds that she's most proud of Uzalo because, as the ratings have proven, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

I mean, who would ever have thought that Generations could be dethroned from their long-held number one spot? In 2018, Uzalo reaching the 10 million mark was a record and now it's become our average. In the beginning, people didn't believe we could do anything significant but we reached number one in our first year - and then they came back with more excuses like, it's a flash in the pan and we wouldn't be able to sustain it', she says.

What sets our productions apart from most is that a lot of SA TV tries to civilise black people. They see something inherently wrong with who we are or how we live and want to tell stories that try to make us more civilised'. At Stained Glass, we see nothing wrong with who we are as a people, or how we live. Instead, we try to reflect and celebrate it, she says.
