Heart-warming series features families from Dublin, Wicklow, Kilkenny and Clare
The series that rebuilds people's lives by rebuilding their homes returns to RT One and RT Player this Sunday evening at 6.30pm.
Presented by Baz Ashmawy, DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland features four very deserving families from across Kilkenny, Clare, Dublin and Wicklow. The families each face difficult personal circumstances and need help to improve their quality of life.
In The Big Build Ireland, each family gets a significant home renovation all through goodwill and delivered in just nine days. The battalions of high-vis vests and hard hats are corralled and cajoled by Baz, who, as always, keeps spirits high and tensions low as teams work into the night to realise these impressive constructions and overhauls.
Presenter Baz Ashmawy said: The way the world is now with so many terrible things going on, I think it's really important to witness good people doing great things for others. Showing kindness and empathy feels more important than ever, and really that's the whole essence of this series.
In the first episode on Sunday night, Baz visits nine-year-old Cayden who was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis, which affects his hands and feet. Cayden also has scoliosis and requires multiple surgeries each year and will continue to do so until his late teens. Cayden lives in Killinarden, Tallaght with his Mam Sinead, Dad Ronald and 15-year-old brother Ethan.
Cayden is fully dependent on a wheelchair. However, the doorways and hallway in the home are not wide enough, which makes getting around difficult for him. Cayden has to be carried upstairs to his bedroom, and to and from the bathroom, which is not adapted for his needs. There is currently no accessible toilet downstairs for Cayden and also no available storage for all his equipment needs.
Cayden desperately needs the doors widened, a downstairs bedroom and bathroom and a ramp to gain access to the house. It was recommended by his Occupational Therapist that the house be adapted for Cayden, but due to the very significant costs, this has not been possible to date.
