We've picked four TV shows in 2023 from Nomzamo Mbatha's Shaka Ilembe, Black Brain Pictures' Lenyalo ha se Papadi, Ferguson Films' Kings of Joburg to Tshedza Pictures' Gqeberha: The Empire.

2023: KINGS OF JOBURG' SEASON TWO 2023 will see some of South Africa's freshest shows from Kings of Joburg, Lenyalo ha se Papadi, Shaka Ilembe, and Gqeberha: The Empire hit the screens.

Kaya 959 reports that the actor Zolisa Xaluva hinted that the much-awaited second season of Kings of Joburg will be coming to our screens on 27 January on Netflix this year.

The first season of the award-winning series first premiered in 2020 with late actor Shona Ferguson, who played the leading role of Simon Vader Masire; Zolisa Xaluva played Mogomotsi Mo Masire, The River actress Tsholofelo Matshaba played a detective and Imbewu actress Buhle Samuels played Angela Masire.

The Netflix series follows the Masire brothers who rule Johannesburg's criminal underworld but a supernatural family curses them and threatens to destroy them.

According to a statement released by the streaming platform When the Masire Family returns, they are haunted by a supernatural family curse and find themselves tangled in a web of betrayal that threatens to destroy the family in this riveting new season.

ZAlebs reports: The eight-part, action-drama series picks up from a successful first season which saw fragmented family structures, treacherous brotherhoods, and a deal with the devil. The maiden Netflix series from Ferguson Films and Samad Davis Production starred the late filmmaker and actor Shona Ferguson onscreen and behind the camera. Ferguson portrayed the character of Simon Vader Masire and was also credited as an executive producer of the show. The sequel sees executive producer & showrunner Samad Davis and executive producer Connie Ferguson teaming up again in what they both described as a tribute to the late great Shona.

Other stars include producer Connie Ferguson, Zolisa Xaluva, Thembi Seethe, Cindy Mahlangu Nnekwa Tsajwa, Thapelo Mokoena, TK Sebothoma, and Altovise Lawrence.

GQEBERHA: THE EMPIRE' REPLACES THE QUEEN Tshedza Pictures is bringing Mzansi Magic viewers a new telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire this January. The isiXhosa telenovela is replacing The Queen which comes to an end after its seven seasons.

Sunday World reports that Gqeberha: The Empire is the first Mzansi Magic telenovela to be filmed entirely in the Eastern Cape.

It is set in the friendly City and is about a man who seemingly has it all - family, love, money, power, glory, and respect. The telenovela follows themes of the dynasty, family, love, betrayal, polygamy, and jealousy.

The cast includes Zikhona Sodlaka (The Wife, Blood Psalms); Zandile Msutwana (Grootboom & Sons, The Queen); Mbulelo Grootboom (Wounds, Suidooster); Kay Bikitsha (The Queen); Phila Madlingozi (Isikizi, The Queen); Anele Matoti (Recipes for Love and Murder, Wounds); and Akhenime Mfenyana.

SHAKA ILEMBE' ON MZANSI MAGIC Actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who produces Shaka Ilembe revealed in a statement that she was privileged to be part of the project. I am honoured to bring the giant that is Queen Nandi to life. History will remember those who informed its people of where we come from, to better understand who we are. Although no exact date has been released, the much-anticipated show is set to premiere on DStv's (Channel 161) Mzansi Magic in 2023.

The show will uncover layers of rich Zulu heritage while striking an intriguing balance between originality and high production value.

LENYALO HA SE PAPADI' Mandla N's production company Black Brain Pictures is bringing a new sitcom on Mzansi Magic titled Lenyalo ha se Papadi (Marriage is no child's play).

The show stars Scandal! actress Mapaseka Koetle as Mpho and Durban Gen actor-director Meshack Magabane as Desmond play a divorced couple, who live together. Viewers will see the estranged couple attempt to date while still living under the same roof.

As Mpho is in her 40s and after being a devoted wife and mother to their two children, she decides to end her 15-year-long marriage. She then realises she cannot afford to move out of their marital home as the divorce process unfolds and neither can her husband. Both are trapped while trying to start a new life without each other, reports Sunday World.
