The SVG Europe and SVG Americas editorial teams were out in full force at last week's IBC Show, covering the biggest sports-technology news and delivering daily SportTechBuzz at IBC roundups. Here is a look at the IBC 2018 SportTechBuzz from Halls 1-3.
In this post, check out what these companies rolled out at IBC: Akamai, Aperi, Arqiva, Arvato Systems, Axon Digital Design, Dolby, Cisco, Eutelsat, Evertz, FOR-A, Friend MTS, Globecast, Harmonic, Hitomi, IMT Vislink, LiveU, MediaKind, Media Links, Microsoft Azure, MX1, Nagra, Net Insight, Nevion, Simplylive, The Switch, and TVU Networks.
AkamaiTV was live on air from IBC in glorious 4K, showcasing a range of technical innovations that deliver the best and most uncompromising experience for viewers across simulcast and on-demand video on stand 1.D35. Edge technology solutions deliver the highest levels of fidelity, agility, intelligence, and security, said the company.
China's state television broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV), has expanded its implementation of the media virtualization functionality of Aperi's (stand 2.C21) IP-based live media processing platform. Building on a successful deployment over the past year, CCTV decided to grow the platform globally, equipping its foreign locations with Aperi technologies so it can produce and distribute programming in a more flexible way. Aperi also showcased a live 4K production chain that relies on Aperi's production platform to achieve true remote production. Visitors to the show saw firsthand how deploying a software-based workflow, instead of traditional hardware-only or hybrid architectures, enable broadcast functions that can be turned on or off, as needed.
Arqiva talked about content aggregation and distribution over IP as well as via satellite. From a comfortable sofa on stand 1.B61, Chris Alner, business development director, satellite and media, said: We are absolutely focused on our role as an aggregator of content for our customers, and not just in a satellite world. Our core demo is about fully public cloud content management and distribution. A large US broadcaster that cannot be named, but who bought some high profile sports rights recently, is now working with Arqiva. We are acquiring content globally, providing it back to them on multiple different formats, from J2K and fiber to multi-package HLS, delivered to them over IP, noted Alner. We said to them it doesn't matter where in the world the content is; we'll get it to them, process it, and contribute it.
Arvato Systems (stand 3.B38) joined forces with Vidispine to showcase video editing and advertising solutions at IBC 2018. Highlights include a new browser-based video editor, exciting new VPMS EditMate functionality, as well as profit-enhancing targeted advertising solutions. The video explosion is driving an increasing need for editing and delivering video content, the company noted. Content owners and broadcasters looking to retain and grow their audiences need to provide their production teams with fast tools efficiently creating and publishing high-quality content, irrespective of location or connectivity. Arvato Systems also showcased a full stack solution for video editing across the enterprise.
Broadcast infrastructure specialist Axon Digital Design (10.A21) announced that Euro Media Group (EMG) is adopting Neuron, Axon's new Network Attached Processor, in its strategic move towards harmonized IP media production. The deal - signed during the public launch of Neuron at IBC 2018 - will see ten NAP systems deployed by EMG's Dutch entity United to manage IP signal processing and provide SDI to IP gateways in new OB trucks set for rollout in 2019. Neuron, the world's first Network Attached Processor (NAP), is Axon's next generation of signal processing designed to address the needs of complex IP and hybrid-IP environments. It fully supports the latest industry standards, handling uncompressed SD, HD, 3G, and UHD signals based on the ST2022-6 and ST2110 specifications. Neuron is fully packed with features like edge synchronizers and converters for processing streams before they enter the core router, reducing complexity in signal routing.
Dolby (2.A11) announced that the 2018 Super Penguin Ultimate Game, which took place on September 15, was streamed live in Dolby Vision HDR via Tencent Video and was accessible to Tencent Video Super VIP users in China with select Dolby Vision-enabled TVs. This makes Tencent Video the world's first OTT content service provider to deliver a live Dolby Vision experience. The 2018 Super Penguin Ultimate Game was Tencent's third annual celebrity basketball game. This year, former NBA players Tracy McGrady and Chris Bosh joined seventeen of China's top celebrities and two Chinese professional basketball players. Dolby Vision can deliver colors never seen before on a screen, incredible contrast, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker.
On Friday, Cisco (1.A71) presented a special panel, moderated by SVG director of digital Brandon Costa, that dug into how IP is playing a role in Advancing Hollywood and Sports Technology Innovation . The panel featured Walt Disney Studios VP of technology and innovation Ben Havey, SWR director of engineering and production Markus Ostertag, Arena TV deputy director of operations Dafydd Rees, and Cisco global director of M&E, Roger Sherwood.
Satellite operator Eutelsat (1.D59) is made a bold move into the world of OTT at IBC with the launch of CIRRUS, a hybrid satellite-OTT delivery solution for DTH TV operators to launch or upgrade their service. According to Gerry O'Sullivan, EVP, global TV and video, it co
