AFI Alumnus Wins Best Picture Oscar

The American Film Institute is proud to highlight the AFI Conservatory alumni featured in the 88th Academy Awards , which followed an unprecedented awards season run for AFI graduates. Producer Steve Golin received the Best Picture Oscar at nights end for SPOTLIGHT. The films credits also include cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi with a special thanks to Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe journalist Michael Rezendes , whose character is played by Mark Ruffalo in the film.

Collectively, four AFI Conservatory alumni received a total of five Oscar nominations.

Also a producer on Best Picture nominee THE REVENANT, Golins previous awards season accolades for SPOTLIGHT include a Producers Guild Award nomination and, over the weekend, the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature.

Also nominated for 2016 Academy Awards were ANOMALISA director/producer Duke Johnson for Best Animated Feature; AFI Conservatory thesis film DAY ONE, which was created entirely by AFI Class of 2014 alumni, for Best Live Action Short; and for Best Cinematography, THE HATEFUL EIGHTs Robert Richardson , who has already won the award three times.

The AFI Conservatory offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.
