Wi over 9 million views, Africa is listening .. but what are ey listening to?

While the production/library music industry has been around for a while and is flourishing the world over, no music library has provided a variety of African country-specific music to meet filmmakers' and advertisers' growing needs on the continent .. other than the Mama Dance ! Music Library of course.

Last year we were approached to supply music for two major Africa focused productions, says General Manager Dale Blignaut. The first was the recently completed DHL Africa as One online series where a rugby ball was taken overland from Cape Town to London in the build up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The DHL team stopped in 34 African countries and, as the deadlines were tight, needed easy access to relevant, high-quality, African production music which we happily supplied.

The series was a great success with over 29 million hits on Youtube. Views came from all over Africa with the feather in Mama Dance's cap being the requests for links to where the music in the videos could be bought! The emotive finale can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj6mgpYpQOo

The second satisfied client, in a similar situation, was Regency Foundation Networx, Dale continues. In conjunction with the UN development programme they have been producing a series called, It's Africa's Time, which is broadcast on DSTV.

Now in its third season, each episode focuses on inclusive business initiatives in various African countries which contribute to poverty reduction. The series has big brands on board like Citi, BP and BMW and Mama Dance continues to provide the fitting music bed on which their inspiring stories are told. If you were producing a film about South Africa's townships, you probably wouldn't use Tanzanian Bongo Flava on the soundtrack, so would you use Kwaito for an East African film?

What we often see is a South African ad agency creating stunning visual commercials for a Nigerian brand. But when it comes to the music selection, somehow Rock or even South African House ends up as the music choice because the options are so limited, Dale explains. Mama Dance made a decision a few years ago to concentrate on sourcing African country and region specific music which we have successfully done with albums in our East, West, Central, and soon to be released North Africa series. Obviously when it comes to the South we have been publishing South African music for 15 years so have lots of albums covering everything from Kwaito to Boeremusiek!
