Video Services Forum gains IABM Industry Collaborative Group endorsement

International champion of interoperability recognized for pioneering open standards development

IABM today announced that the Video Services Forum (VSF) has received accreditation under the IABM ICG (Industry Collaborative Groups) Endorsement Program.

From its foundation in 1997, VSF has fostered the development and adoption of open standards for video transport. With a membership comprised of service providers, users and manufacturers, the VSF today is an international association dedicated to interoperability, quality metrics and education for video networking technologies.

VSF's activities include: providing forums that embrace every aspect of video networking technologies; exchanging non-proprietary information to promote the development of technology and fostering resolution of commonly-held issues; and promoting interoperability by contributing to, and supporting development of, standards by national and international standards bodies.

Launched at NAB this year, the ICG Endorsement Program is a major IABM initiative - designed to encourage collaboration across a wide range of industry issues and opportunities, from best practice to standardization and interoperability. IABM's vision is for a universally recognized framework where endorsed collaborative groups will be supported, promoted and encouraged to fulfil their potential and move forward in an open, constructive environment to the benefit of the wider industry.

The VSF seeks to partner with other organizations in the industry to aid our members, and the industry at large, during this period of rapid change, said Richard Friedel, VSF President. We see certification of the VSF by our industry suppliers at the IABM as a way to aid IABM members as they work through this transition.

The Video Services Forum has been a champion of open standards and interoperability in our industry for nearly 20 years now, and perfectly mirrors the criteria for our ICG Endorsement Program, said Stan Moote, IABM CTO. Most recently, VSF was responsible for creating TR-03 and TR-04, which they passed on to SMPTE as the genesis of SMPTE 2110, which specifies the carriage, synchronization and description of separate elementary essence streams over IP. This will be a game changer for the broadcast and media industry, and I am delighted to be able to recognize VSF in this way for the great work it has done - and continues to do.

Collaborative groups can be an excellent way of moving things forward quickly and efficiently. However, if they are not properly constituted, these groups can sometimes lead us down blind alleys or serve the commercial interests of just a few. Our ICG Endorsement Program has been carefully formulated to avoid these pitfalls, and we envision that endorsed collaborative groups will have the authority and momentum to solve problems and lead the industry forward by supporting and promoting industry standardization while avoiding proprietary dead-ends.
