For decades, broadcasters have designed production around one rule: build for the biggest job that's likely to be booked. Over-provisioning was the engineering answer to an unpredictable production calendar, and the cost of that headroom was absorbed as a necessity.
That model is breaking down. Audiences are fragmenting across streaming, social and FAST platforms, rights costs continue to climb, and margins are tightening across the industry. Broadcasters can no longer be confident that one system will cover every eventuality. What they need instead is the freedom to choose the production model that actually makes commercial sense project by project, and the confidence that their technology will support that choice without retraining or investing in new hardware, and without compromise. And that choice is only real if the tools in the chain can work together, rather than locking broadcasters into a single vendor's stack.
Freedom of that kind depends on common ground rather than any one vendor's roadmap. The EBU's Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) project, and the Media eXchange Layer (MXL) developed alongside it, are fast becoming that foundation, enabling a shared way for software from different vendors to run on the same infrastructure and exchange video, audio and metadata in real time. Where closed systems once dictated what a broadcaster could build, open frameworks put that decision back in their hands.
This is the gap Calrec's IP-native ecosystem is built to close. With the Argo console range at its centre, ImPulseV extending processing into virtualised environments, with MXL support to follow, Calrec lets broadcasters move between on-premise, remote, virtualised and orchestrated production, on their own terms.
When bigger stops paying off
The instinct to provision for the biggest project made sense when production models were static. It makes far less sense in an industry where a broadcaster might run a major live event one day and a lean, digital-first stream the next.
The Savannah Bananas' Banana Ball TV (BTV), which recently installed three Argo M consoles, three Type R systems, and True Control 2.0, illustrates this in practice. In May, the team played at College Station in Texas, one of the largest venues in the state, which has over 100,000 seating capacity. Two days prior, they played at a high school with free admission and a max capacity of 1,000.
More content, more channels, more pressure
With consumers now firmly in the scheduling driving seat, demand for niche and diverse content is growing, and broadcasters are under pressure to serve wider, more varied audiences across a growing number of platforms, often with the same or shrinking teams.
Meeting that demand has meant leaning further into hybrid production models. This blending of on-premise infrastructure with remote and virtualised processing has become an established way for broadcasters to generate more content without proportionally higher spend. It is also opening up coverage that would never have justified a traditional setup, including tier-two and tier-three sport, digital-first coverage, and secondary content around top-tier events, all building new audiences and new revenue that a fixed, over-provisioned facility could never have supported.
None of this is achieved through scale alone. It is achieved through agility, the ability to add or remove processing power, and switch production models quickly and easily.
One ecosystem, every production model
Calrec's IP-native ecosystem, built around the Argo range of consoles, is designed to run on-premise, remotely or virtualised on ImPulseV, which is also available on orchestration platforms such as Grass Valley's AMPP and NEP's Platform, giving broadcasters the ability to configure each production independently rather than committing to one fixed model.
Three components make that choice practical rather than theoretical:
Argo consoles provide the control surface, available in Q, S and M variants to suit different scales of production.
True Control 2.0 is the layer that connects it all together, allowing every console, processing core and virtualised resource to operate as one system, with full control over EQ, dynamics, routing, direct outputs and delay, regardless of where the processing is physically happening. A single controller can manage up to five other Calrec consoles or processing cores at once, extending functionality without additional hardware.
ImPulseV, Calrec's virtualised audio mixing engine, extends that choice. Handling up to 256 processing paths and supporting all immersive audio formats, ImPulseV can be deployed on-premise on a standard COTS server, on public cloud infrastructure, or across a hybrid of both. It can be accessed from any Calrec Argo surface or via the browser-based Calrec Assist interface, so broadcasters can scale depending on the size of the project.
New, smaller DSP pack sizes of 96 and 140 processing paths join the existing 256-path configuration, tailored for smaller systems that still demand uncompromising, broadcast-grade audio performance. Calrec has also introduced short-term, flexible licensing options, including 1-year, 12-week and 4-week subscriptions. This lowers the barrier to entry for ImPulseV, putting production capacity in broadcasters' hands exactly when they need it, without long-term commitments or high upfront costs, making it ideal for temporary, variable or one-off productions.
New updates to ImPulseV demonstrated at IBC 2026 reinforce Calrec's commitment to the EBU's DMF project.
Henry Goodman, Director of Product Management at Calrec says, The DMF project and the associated Media eXchange Layer (MXL) development aim to solve many of the real-time challenges of creating the dynamic software production environment of the future.
