An electrifying mix of wild food, adventure & a hint of glamour
Khanh Ong's Wild Food is a brand new, 10-episode cooking series exploring Australia's wild side, combining regional produce, adventure and a hint of glamour, premiering on SBS Food on Sunday 30 April at 8.30pm, with new episodes airing weekly. The program will also be available to stream free on SBS On Demand.
Hosting his very first cooking series, enigmatic cook, MasterChef Australia and Australian Survivor fan-favourite, and author Khanh Ong will take viewers on a high-energy culinary adventure each week, hitting the road less travelled to remote corners of Australia.
From the rugged coastline of Tasmania to the remote mangroves of Far North Queensland, Khanh will jump out of his comfort zone on wild culinary adventures, exploring each location and diving deep into the local produce.
Each episode will see Khanh search for native ingredients with local people who share some of their best kept secrets to help create an epic meal in the wild. Khanh swaps the traditional kitchen for an open fire or the back of a four-wheel drive, cooking new dishes in this adventurous series.
Whether he is diving for abalone in Port Lincoln or spearing mud crabs with traditional owners of the land in Far North Queensland, Khanh's infectious smile, down to earth nature and cheeky sense of humour will surely win you over to the wild side of life.
Khanh Ong said. I love learning about different cultures and cuisines. Finding new and exciting ingredients and cooking in the wild is what really thrills me. I can't believe that I get to travel around Australia in this new show!
Emily Griggs, SBS Head of Food, said. Khanh is fun, fresh and infectiously enthusiastic, so it's an absolute pleasure to welcome him to the SBS Food family. This vibrant series sees Khanh trip and skip (yes skip) across our diverse country, showcasing the best produce from regional and remote communities along with delicious dishes. The series is a wild adventure and a wonderful way to discover many great food regions from the comfort of the loungeroom.
Craig Pringle, Executive Producer and co-owner of Black Fox Media said, We are thrilled to bring a fresh and exciting approach to the traditional cooking show format with Khanh Ongs Wild Food. Viewers can expect a different perspective on traditional cooking, using wild and fresh ingredients to create spectacular dishes. Its going to be an epic journey and I cant wait for everyone to join in!
Join Khanh on his travels to discover new flavours, cultures and experiences across the lush and diverse island continent of Australia, with plenty of outdoor cooking.
Episode 1
Khanh Ong journeys to Australia's tropical Far North Queensland to discover the culinary secrets of the Nywaigi people, the traditional owners of the land. He learns to cook Magpie Goose with Nywaigi Man Buddy Cassidy, explores the tropical coastline, and uses locally foraged ingredients to cook up a summer feast at a waterfall.
Episode 2
Journey to the rugged coastal town of Port Lincoln, in South Australia to unlock the secrets of the local seafood. From locals, Khanh Ong learns how to trawl for wild prawns, harvest oysters and forages for unique coastal ingredients before putting his skills to the test at a beach cook up with local guide, Ben.
Episode 3
Travel to Cairns, with Khanh Ong as he embarks on an adventure from the coast to the rainforests of Mission Beach. Learning from locals, he learns how to hunt mud crabs with a spear on the traditional fishing grounds of the Kuku Yalanji people, creates a sashimi dish from the freshest tuna and cooks a whole wild pig over a fire.
Khanh Ong's Wild Food airs on Sundays on SBS Food from April 30 at 8.30pm. The series is available on SBS On Demand and will be subtitled in Simplified Chinese and Arabic.
