UHDTVs to Exceed 40 Percent of 06 Panel Shipments

ENGLEWOOD, COLO.-Demand for UHD TV panels is on the rise from manufacturers and consumers, as customers are recognizing the advantages of UHD with their large screens. IHS is now predicting that the year-over-year unit shipments of UHD TV panels for 2015 are expected to double to a total of 40 million units. In addition, IHS forecasts that UHD TVs will make up 40 percent of the total shipment area of panels in 2016.

A big reason for the surge in UHD TV panel shipments, according to IHS, is the drop in TV panel prices. This occurred after the display supply capacity got a boost from expansion in Gen 8 facility lines at Chinese panel producers. The increased demand has also narrowed the price gap between UHD and FullHD TV panels. A year ago the gap was at 30 percent, in September the gap was lowered to 11 percent.

Consumer demand isn't expected to slow down either, according to Ricky Park, director of large display research for IHS Technology: The consumer requirement for higher resolution will also grow, as more 4K TV content becomes available.

IHS Display Long-Term Demand Forecast Tracker' predicts that 67 million UHD TV panels will be shipped in 2016.
