CaptionX, an AI captioning tool used by over 50,000 video creators, has launched Clips, a feature that takes a long video or podcast and returns the short, self-contained moments worth posting, ranked and ready to publish. Rather than scoring the video frames or the audio waveform, Clips works entirely from the transcript, and it is built so that a clip can never begin or end mid-sentence. Every clip is free to generate and fully watchable before a creator decides to keep it, and videos up to three hours long are processed in tens of seconds.

How it finds clips: Clips works from the spoken words with per-word timestamps, so every decision about what to post is made on language and timing rather than on the picture. The first pass has no AI in it: the timestamped words are grouped into whole sentences by rule, with a sentence closing on terminal punctuation, on a pause in speech of around three-quarters of a second, or on a length ceiling. It also flags false endings, where a segment stops only because the speaker drew breath mid-thought, and marks them incomplete. Each sentence becomes the unit everything downstream works on.

Why clips never cut mid-sentence: The model is handed the sentences as a numbered list, and for each clip it proposes it returns a start sentence and an end sentence, a contiguous run of whole sentences, plus the one peak sentence where the hook lands. It never returns timestamps, so a clip snaps to sentence boundaries by construction. A separate deterministic engine then range-checks those boundaries against the real transcript, refuses to start on a mid-thought fragment or end on a throwaway Yeah. , and only converts to seconds at the very end, read from the actual timestamps of the chosen words rather than any number the model produced.

How clips are ranked: The model rates each candidate across six dimensions, hook, payoff, whether it stands on its own, emotion, quotability and pacing, which combine into a single score. The ordering itself is handled in code, deterministically, so it can be tuned and tested without changing a prompt, and it weighs how watchable a clip is, not just what it is about. CaptionX is deliberate that the score is a within-video, relative-quality signal rather than a prediction of views or virality, in contrast to tools that stamp a percent viral figure on a clip.

Handling long files: The three-hour ceiling is a cost guard rather than a technical wall. The video is never decoded whole; instead the browser streams the file in small slices, extracts only the compressed audio, and re-encodes it to a small speech-grade file locally, so a two-hour video comes out around 30 MB. The transcript is then analysed in overlapping ten-minute windows that slide forward every eight minutes, running in parallel, which is why a three-hour podcast finishes in tens of seconds.

How it is priced: Generating clips is free, and every clip is fully watchable before a creator decides. Payment applies only to the clips a creator keeps, so the 20 to 40 percent of clips that get discarded never appear on the bill.
