The South Africa-founded Stunteam have received recognition with a nomination in the category of Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture for their work in the 2022 movie The Woman King.

The Woman King is an American epic historical action drama film about the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries.

Cape Town-born Stunteam co-founders and directors Grant Powell and Vernon Willemse have a combined 24 years of experience working in the film industry.

As fight choreographers and stunt performers they have been involved in a number of big budget film and TV productions both locally and internationally.

These include Scorpion King 4, Death Race 3 - Inferno, Homeland, Dominion, Blacksails, Dread, Zulu, Mad Max and Kite among many others.

Powell was born in Mitchell's Plain while Willemse hails from Macassar.

Powell and Willemse face a tough ask in walking away with the award as they are up against four other blockbuster movies, namely Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Top Gun: Maverick.

The Woman King received a second nomination with Viola Davis nominated in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

This year's SAG awards will take place on Sunday, 26 February.
