Sony Introduces ECM-W5 Wireless Microphone System

Sony Electronics has introduced the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system for video creators, which pairs two transmitters with one receiver. It transmits over a line-of-sight distance of up to 500 meters and is designed to reduce audio dropouts in congested radio-frequency environments. Sony says transmission is approximately three times more stable than the ECM-W3, and low-latency transmission supports live streaming.

Through the Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe, 32-bit float audio travels digitally to a compatible camera and records with video in a single file, with no external recorder or separate audio file to synchronize. The microphones support 96 kHz high-resolution audio recording, and a 3.5 mm input supports lavalier and external microphones, including the separately sold ECM-L1.

Each transmitter has 64 GB of built-in storage for backup recording, holding up to 90 hours of audio at 32-bit float/48 kHz or up to 60 hours at 24-bit/96 kHz. Compatible Sony wireless headphones can be used for cable-free monitoring and as wireless microphone inputs.

The system records up to four channels of audio in-camera, and the transmitters and receiver are sold separately to support multi-camera production. Timecode functionality simplifies synchronization across cameras and audio recordings. Compatible Sony cameras can power the receiver and link power control through the MI Shoe. The supplied USB Type-C adapter enables recording on compatible smartphones and PCs, and connecting a transmitter directly over Bluetooth allows wireless recording. The transmitters provide up to 11 hours of operating time and have a dust- and moisture-resistant design.

The products will be available in November 2026. Pre-orders for the ECM-W5 began Oct. 14.
