CABSAT 06: the highlights

CABSAT has closed for another year after three days of new product launches, conferences and Middle Eastern firsts.

Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 8-10 March, the event welcomed some 950 exhibiting brands from over 60 countries.

In addition to scores of new-to-the-show broadcast and production companies, content studios and distributors, telcos, cable TV and satellite firms, more than 13,000 regional and international industry professionals tested and experienced the latest equipment in the broadcast, satellite communication, content delivery and electronic media industries. TVBEurope looks at some of the highlights:

There were multiple product launches on show at CABSAT 2016, including the global launch of SES' Enterprise+, a connectivity platform offering up to 1Gbps of connectivity with 99.5 per cent service availability. It's a plug and play offering with pay-as-you-go options to ensure the service can go live as quickly as possible.

Also officially launching a product at CABSAT was ABOX42 GmbH. ABOX42 provides total set top box solutions for IPTV, OTT and Hybrid DVB Operator projects, and it showcased the launch of its new ABOX42OPL (Operator Secure Linux) and OPA (Operator Secure Android) dual-operating system solution, which allows users to run both OS environment for different services.

Onto region debuts, and Calrec Audio presented its integrated Waves solution, dynamic automation, Fieldbox remote IO solution and Hydra2 interface card.

Waves uses a brand-new SoundGrid interface module on Calrec's Hydra2 network. The module provides direct connection between Hydra2 and the Waves SoundGrid network, allowing integration and fewer parts in the chain, designed to offer lower latency and greater reliability.

Automation, designed to record the movements of a console's channel and bus controls in real time, operates entirely in the background during a live broadcast.

Fieldbox is a range of small format I/O units that brings the advantages of Calrec's Hydra2 stage box to rugged environments and areas where rack space is at a premium.

In turn, Dalet showcased Galaxy, its enterprise MAM platform that facilitates collaboration and business visibility for news, sports, production, programming and archiving workflows. It showcased new advancements at CABSAT 2016, including work order tracking, media packaging, native subtitling support, tighter social media integration and enhanced collaboration tools.

Additionally, Dalet showed its new radio solution capabilities. Al Rayyan Radio Satellite Channel has employed Dalet software with the intention of automating, streamlining and unifying all of its media acquisition, production and delivery under a single platform. With the Dalet Radio tools for production and playout operations, Al Rayyan has claimed it has It achieved greater day-to-day efficiency, outputting a higher quality product for its audience

Also debuting in the region was the Lawo Kick, an automated audio mixing technology that redefines the audio production for major live ball sports. It is available as a software-only solution for productions using Lawo mc consoles, as well as a hardware bundled solution for productions using other manufacturers' audio mixers.

Snell Advanced Media (SAM) demonstrated a total of four products, the pinnacle of which was the 4K Kahuna switcher with Maverik control panel. According to SAM, it delivers the ultimate power, creativity, flexibility and built-in SAM reliability, enabling users to create their productions their way.

Second on SAM's list was the ICE channel-in-a-box solution, which was designed to incorporate all the operational, technical, regulatory and commercial functionality required for broadcast playout.

SAM also showcased the Enterprise sQ, a fast-turnaround production system that the company claims will provide the fastest-to-air workflow for multi-media, multi-platform news and sports environments. The system is integrated with SAM's LiveTouch sports highlighting and replay solution, providing highlights selection, playlist editing and live playout control.

Finally, SAM presented the Quantel Rio, with the latest V3 software. It supports advanced HDR colour and finishing and native colour spaces. The recent introduction of SAM's new Quantel Rio range affords a choice of 2K, 4K, 6K and 8K turnkey systems and two software-only options - 4K and the new Rio Assist workflow partner.
