IBC 2026: MC-IF Demonstrates VVC Capabilities

The Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) will demonstrate Versatile Video Coding (VVC) capabilities at IBC2026 (Hall 2, Stand 2.B13), as the codec moves toward commercial deployment. VVC is already being deployed nationally in Brazil, and increased participation from device and chip manufacturers signals growing industry readiness.

In the first half of 2026, there has been positive gradual progress for the next level of adoption of VVC, says Justin Ridge, President, MC-IF and Principal Engineer, Nokia Multimedia Research and Standardization. System on chip manufacturers are including more VVC capabilities and content providers are starting to express more interest in the codec. MC-IF members are bringing forward use cases for VVC that enable different parts of the ecosystem to visualize what is possible with the standard.

Demonstrations at IBC2026 include:

An ARM NEON-optimized VVC software decoder targeting real-time 8-bit and 10-bit video playback on ARM64 Android devices, with decoding performance up to 150% faster than existing software decoder baselines and up to 12 hours of sustained HD playback. An open-source roadmap via C/C++, FFmpeg, and Android JNI is planned.

A Dolby demonstration combining VVC compression with the ETSI/3GPP Coded Multi-Source Media Format (CMMF) for live streaming, showing side-by-side delivery via single-source and multi-CDN paths, illustrating how CMMF improves streaming reliability when network conditions or CDNs become impaired.

An InterDigital and NHK demonstration of multilayer VVC covering content overlay - including captions and sign language as selectable enhancement layers over a base layer - and spatial and quality scalability, comparing dual-layer configurations against single-layer coding across HDR UHD and SDR HD configurations.

A Qualcomm and Alibaba end-to-end live streaming demonstration using VVC for real-time encoding, transmission, and playback on mobile devices, illustrating bitrate reduction while maintaining visual quality under bandwidth-constrained conditions.
