Construction of Ningbo s first tram test line expected to kick off in November

The construction of Ningbo's first tram test line is expected to kick off in November 2014. The tram test line is expected to be put into trail operation in November 2016 and put into official use in February 2017.

With an investment of RMB 10.96 billion, the tram test line will have a 8.16-kilometer-long track with 12 stations and one vehicle storage site. The distance between stations will range from 465 meters to 1,020 meters, with an average distance of 723 meters between stations.

According to the Ningbo Modern Urban Transport Development and Construction Co. Ltd., the company that is responsible for construction, the tram test line will start from East Nanda Road Station, head north along South Tiantong Road, turn west at Yinzhou Avenue, turn north at South Ningnan Road, and finally arrive at the terminal located on North Ningnan Road.

With an average speed of 25 kilometers per hour, the tram system is expected to reach a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour. Besides, a number of special Ningbo elements will be added to the tram system.

A tram, also known as a tramcar or a trolley, is an efficient, emission-free mode of rail transport. Besides, the construction of a tramline is much cheaper than a subway. As trams need no tunnels, the construction of a tramline costs just one-third the expense of an underground railway. Trams are also very safe compared to other modern forms of transportation.
