Tribeca Films to Release the Acclaimed LARPing Doc WE CAN BE HEROES by Carina Mia Wong and Alex Simmons, Alongside a Slate of Festival-Favorite Titles

(NEW YORK, NY | July 16, 2025) Tribeca Films, the distribution label from Tribeca Enterprises and Giant Pictures, today announced the upcoming release of the critically acclaimed documentary WE CAN BE HEROES from filmmakers Carina Mia Wong and Alex Simmons, alongside three additional titles from the festival circuit. WE CAN BE HEROES will be released digitally on July 29. The film world premiered at SXSW in 2024, where it won a Special Jury Award for Bravery and Empathy.

The film has been a labor of love from the entire team from the start, with a unique opportunity to pay tribute to the teenage experience and the journey of self-transformation - in the most magical way, says director Carina Mia Wong. In a time where we are constantly overwhelmed by news of turbulence and uncertainty, we hope the film will inspire you to look around with fresh eyes and find all that we can still be - and need to be - hopeful for.

Produced by Concordia Studio (Davis Guggenheim's production company) and Muck Media, WE CAN BE HEROES chronicles a group of self-proclaimed nerdy teenagers at a live action role-playing (LARP-ing) summer camp.

The documentary kicks off a dynamic slate of summer releases from Tribeca Films, spotlighting emerging talent and bold storytelling. Additional upcoming titles include: Christopher Bouckoms and Sam Pezzullo's THE PREMIERE, a mockumentary following the production of a musical version of SCREAM, which world premiered at the 2024 Hamptons International Film Festival; Hugo Ru z's Spanish-language thriller ONE NIGHT WITH ADELA, which won the Best Narrative Director Jury Award at the 2023 Tribeca Festival; and IF THAT MOCKINGBIRD DON'T SING, a coming-of-age dramedy written and directed with striking authenticity by filmmaker Sadie Bones at the age of 19-years-old, which world premiered at the 2024 Bentonville Film Festival.

This slate reflects everything we love about independent film - bold storytelling, breakout talent, and voices that surprise us. From a heartfelt LARPing doc to a musical mockumentary and a teen-directed coming-of-age story, these films remind us how expansive and alive the indie space really is. These four titles join Tribeca Films' previously announced 2025 lineup, including BEYOND THE GAZE: JULE CAMPBELL'S SWIMSUIT ISSUE, a documentary about the female founding editor of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue featuring Tyra Banks, Elle Macpherson and Christie Brinkley; THE BRITTO DOC, which chronicles the life and work of the world-renowned Brazilian pop artist Romero Britto; and Chazz Palminteri's A BRONX TALE: ONE MAN SHOW.
