New NG Book- 67 REASONS WHY CATS ARE BETTER AN DOGS

WASHINGTON (Sept. 19, 2014)-A forthcoming book by BuzzFeed Editorial Director Jack Shepherd, titled 67 REASONS WHY CATS ARE BETTER THAN DOGS (National Geographic Books: ISBN: 978-1-4262-1386-1; on sale Oct. 7, 2014; $12.99), offers nearly incontrovertible evidence of felines' preeminence over canines. Shepherd, who created BuzzFeed's Animals section and is affectionately known as Buzzfeed's Beastmaster, developed the book based on a popular post from the site. In 67 REASONS WHY CATS ARE BETTER THAN DOGS, Shepherd pairs witty text with hilarious photographic evidence to argue for the supremacy of cats.

In his introduction, Shepherd writes, Ever since the first time some hunter-gatherer took a mangy wolfhound onto his hearth and found that he was able to tolerate the fleas and the dog breath . . . there has been a truly unfortunate misconception that dogs are perfect, and that cats are, like, too aloof' or whatever. Well! This book clears that up.

By documenting cats' superiority in such areas as athleticism, artistry, intellect and work ethic, Shepherd provides compelling and comical arguments for his assertion. The 67 reasons begin boldly with Reason #1: Cats are better at pickup basketball; they span such points as Reason #16: Cats are better problem solvers, and Reason #23: Cats will protect your family; and go on to highlight valuable skills like Reason #34: Cats are musically gifted, and Reason #52: Cats are patient hunters.

In addition to Shepherd's 67 reasons, the book also features a number of hard-hitting Cat Facts that lend support to Shepherd's arguments. For example, accompanying Reason #28: Cats comfort the afflicted - which contrasts a photo of a cat helping a canine pal test the durability of his surgical cone with a photo of a selfish dog taking attention away from a sick child in hospital - is a Cat Fact about the health benefits of felines: Scientists believe that both cats and their people gain health benefits from purring - the frequency of a purr, around 25 hertz, promotes wound and bone healing and relieves pain.
