TOKYO PHOENIX TO HAVE WORLD PREMIERE AT MIPDOC 2017

Paris, 17 February 2017 - Tokyo Phoenix: The Rise of Modern Japan , a major documentary from NHK, Arte France and CC&C, will have its World Premiere TV Screening at MIPDoc 2017.

The world's leading factual screenings and conference, MIPDoc takes place in Cannes, France, on 1-2 April 2017, ahead of the MIPTV entertainment content market. The World Premiere TV Screening of Tokyo Phoenix is scheduled for Sunday 2 April at 5:15pm in the JW Marriott Grand Theatre.

The documentary was initially produced for the Japanese market by public broadcaster NHK, drawing on its vast archives. It was adapted for international distribution by French coproducer CC&C, a specialist in historical films with unique expertise in colorisation techniques, in coproduction with Arte France. International sales are being handled by French distributor Terranoa.

The film also draws on extensive French, British, German, and Russian archive footage of Japan from the first half of the 20th century, as well as rare home-movie images.

Now the world's largest city and symbol of a futuristic modernity, 150 years ago Tokyo was a city of wooden dwellings and the seat of power for the samurai. Heavily damaged twice during the 20th century - in the 1923 earthquake and during World War II - the city's spectacular rebirths were driven by the resilience of its inhabitants. Tokyo established itself as a major urban power, in the process becoming one of the most up-to-date and populous capitals in the world. Now, in the early 21st century, Tokyo is the quintessential modern megalopolis.

This documentary underlines NHK's strategy of developing international coproductions, taking local topics with global appeal. The MIPDoc World Premiere TV Screening will be followed by a discussion to explore how globally anticipated events like the 2020 Tokyo Olympics provide an opportunity for related programming to enjoy a major visibility boost, and how NHK is preparing for Japan's moment in the Olympic spotlight.
