TDF has its own ultra high-speed network for TV and radio transmission to its transmitters. Combining two complementary technologies (microwave transmission and fibre optics), this unique network in France can carry all forms of data including voice, video and data, with bandwidth of 10, 40 right up to 100 or even 200 Gbit and currently covers 4,200 km.
By year end 2014, it will be deployed on 5,000 km right into the heart of the regions with the ability to carry large data volumes in line with the same high 24/7 service quality standards with stable and fixed bandwidth as required in the TV and radio industry.
This network is operated and fully supervised by TDF on a 24/7 basis.
TDF is developing an offer to provide access to this ultra high-speed network for IT and telecoms firms with a view to boosting economic activity in the regions. As such, in addition to enabling transmission of DTT programs, TDFs ultra high-speed network will facilitate archiving of sensitive data (e.g. e-health, medical imaging etc. ), file-sharing, video conferencing, e-commerce, etc. It may also enable sports events to be broadcast through real time transmission of uncompressed HD. In practice, it will be possible for example to transmit over 12,000 simultaneous uncompressed HD video streams through this network.
It will also connect up TDFs regional data centres, including the first in Bordeaux opened in May 2013 and the second in Lille planned for Autumn 2013, followed by Rennes and Aix-Marseille in 2014.
Deployment of TDFs ultra high-speed network will be done in two major phases.
The first phase that is currently being rolled out includes connections between Bordeaux and Paris and has been operational since 1 May, thereby enabling the first transmission services of the Bordeaux datacentre. The South loop has been functional since June and the North-West loop will go live during the summer. The second deployment phase has been scheduled for 2014.
Backed by its ultra high-speed network, TDF takes on a leading role in boosting digital development in the regions
The objectives of the French governments planned super high-speed broadband programme includes both technological progress and boosting digital take-up in the regions.
Today, businesses, particularly in sparsely populated regions, must work with digital so as to improve competitiveness. With the deployment of its network, TDF becomes part of the very high-speed broadband technology panel in France thereby fostering the emergence of new services such as e-health, e-education, e-government and e-training etc.
