IBC 2014: AFP chooses Quantel for News Production Everywhere Quantel enables leading French news agency to deliver the worlds most advanced news workflow

IBC, Amsterdam, 12th September 2014: Agence France-Presse (AFP), the worlds longest-established news agency, has ordered a global news production solution from Quantel. Scheduled to go into service during 2015, the AFP system brings together Quantel Enterprise sQ, QTube and revolutionQ technologies to provide an integrated international news workflow that delivers a true Production Everywhere solution. Every user, no matter where they are in the world, can work with local and centrally stored media to produce compelling stories, versioned to suit the differing cultures of the various world markets served by AFP.

AFP typically produces 100 video stories a day, with localised versions for six different markets, all in TV and web formats, making a total output of around 1200 unique pieces daily. The workflow will archive up to 3000 hours of media every year. A fundamental requirement of the new system is to give users easy, fast access to all archive media alongside current footage - no matter where they are or where the media is.

The Quantel system will combine an Enterprise sQ fast-turnaround production system at AFPs Paris headquarters with support for 11 international bureaux and 60+ roving journalists via Quantels QTube Production Everywhere technology. Archive will be handled via Quantels revolutionQ software, which delivers fast-turnaround performance from off the shelf storage.

The Quantel system is configured as two zones to give operational redundancy, with storage for more than 15,000 hours of AVC-Intra 100 HD video. The majority of media transfers will be file-based, so the system is configured with 10 sQ Fileflow automated file I/O applications, with video ingest (satellite, lines etc) handled by sQ Record and playout via sQ Play. 40 sQ Edit seats handle craft editing in Paris, with a further 76 QTube Edits and QTube Browser licences providing worldwide editing capability. Quantel is co-operating with consultants Cap Gemini to integrate with AFPs in-house management and distribution system, IRIS, via the QTube and Fileflow APIs.
