APRIL 10, 2013 (Atlanta, GA) Cox Communications' multifaceted approach to energy management and conservation and the example it sets for the cable telecommunications industry was the subject of opening remarks by Cox Executive Vice President and CTO Kevin Hart at SCTE SEMI (Smart Energy Management Initiative) Forum 2013 in Atlanta today.

Hart kicked off the daylong event with a discussion of how Cox Enterprises companies, including Cox Communications, are participating in Cox Conserves. Launched in 2007 by Cox Enterprises Chairman Jim Kennedy, Cox Conserves is the company's national sustainability program that is designed to reduce Cox Enterprises' carbon footprint by 20 percent. Cox Conserves seeks to reduce Cox Enterprises' energy consumption by embracing alternative energy, conserving natural resources and inspiring eco-friendly behavior.

During the presentation, Hart highlighted how:

Cox's newly built CTech office building in Sandy Springs, Ga., was constructed with environmental considerations in mind, including the use of reflective roofing and pavement materials; low-flow fixtures that achieve a 37% water use reduction; and a plan that resulted in 95% recycling of construction debris.

Cox's use of GPS systems has resulted in savings of more than 1 million gallons of fuel and a reduction of 25 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

The freestanding canopy solar array at Cox Enterprises headquarters produces roughly 140,000 kWh of energy, reduces carbon emissions by 94 tons and provides shade for employees' vehicles.

"Cox Enterprises is among the leaders in our industry in recognizing how strategies that are good for the environment and for the bottom line are not mutually exclusive," said Derek DiGiacomo, senior director, information systems and energy management programs for SCTE. "The programs that Kevin Hart outlined this morning are clear evidence of the strides the industry is taking to adopt and embrace sustainability that ultimately adds value."

Following his remarks, Hart engaged in a discussion with Joel Babbit, CEO and co-founder of the Mother Nature Network, on how the business community can address energy issues. SCTE SEMI Forum 2013 today also includes presentations and panel discussions within three program modules: Energy Evolutions A Look Into Applications, Software, Modeling and Smart Grid; Outside Plant and Fleet Energy Savings From Workforce Management Approaches; and Facilities Modular Approaches to Facility Energy Management.
