NAB 05: MTI Film to Debut CORTEX v. .0

At NAB 2015, MTI Film will unveil a major update to its industry-leading CORTEX family of dailies processing solutions. CORTEX v. 2.0 will introduce new features and media support that will significantly expand its scope as a post production workflow utility. MTI Film will also introduce two new CORTEX products, CORTEX D.I.T. and CORTEX Transcode.

MTI Film will demonstrate CORTEX v 2.0 and other products at Booth SL14616.

CORTEX v 2.0 will include a first-of-its-kind feature for detecting and correcting dead pixels, a common problem in digital cinematography. Dead Pixel Detection can automatically identify dead pixels in the sensors of digital cinema cameras. Information about dead pixels is stored in the CORTEX Manifest file for delivery to post production. Dead Pixel Correction, included CORTEX Enterprise, automatically repairs dead pixel artifacts.

Additionally, CORTEX v 2.0 will feature an editing tool that offers a simple way to produce review media and other types of custom compositions for delivery. The edit tool includes overwrite, insert and extract functions, allowing the operator to carry out basic editing tasks without tying up a separate editing system and expensive Editor.

As CORTEX has been adopted by more studio and facility clients, our customers are finding they want to use it in ways that go beyond its role as a comprehensive dailies solution, explains MTI Film Product Director Amy Hawthorne. We're responding by adding features that resolve common issues or fill gaps in the digital post workflow. CORTEX is becoming the Swiss Army knife of post production.

CORTEX v. 2.0 also adds support for IMF, JPEG2000 and HEVC formats. Expanded format support addresses the need to meet new UHD/4K delivery requirements from broadcasters and streaming services. CORTEX Enterprise 2.0 continues to include MTIs high quality UpRes to 4K algorithm for up-converting VFX shots as well as or even converting entire existing libraries for 4K delivery.

The new CORTEX D.I.T. is a free, on-set version of the software that enables D.I.T.s to perform comprehensive media offload and backup functions, apply color takes as basic looks or with full ASC CDL primary color, and output color information and other metadata for use downstream. This metadata can be exported in the form of a CORTEX Manifest file, for complete media tracking and guaranteed color coherence in post, or in industry- standard LUT and CDL files for cross-compatibility.

Today, color pipelines are complicated, notes Hawthorne. DITs need to manage many types of files and data, including stills, LUTs and CDLs. The CORTEX Manifest provides an easy and reliable way to bring everything into one system. It allows you to track your media and maintain color accuracy all the way through post.

CORTEX Transcode is a low-cost, transcoding solution, designed to be used both by post houses and anyone else needing a fast, reliable conversion tool, - whether for one-off projects or repetitive bulk renders. Facilities have come to rely on CORTEX because its transcoding engine is fast and support all formats, Hawthorne says.

She adds that CORTEX Transcode is also ideal for film restoration operations as it provides a simple way to produce media used by other departments in the process, such as audio, and to generate review and archive media.
