Mississippi State University Extends Camera Relationship with KOKUSAI DENKI

Mississippi State University's University Television Center has purchased four KOKUSAI DENKI SK-UHD7000-S2 cameras since 2024, with plans to add two more, as part of a gradual modernization of its studio and field production workflows. The center also operates two KOKUSAI DENKI SK-HD1000 studio cameras installed in 2009 that remain in full operation.

The 10-person Television Center produces live commencements, outdoor concerts, parades, interview programs, and corporate events, distributing content through MSTV, a non-commercial cable channel available in more than 20 Mississippi cities, and a free streaming app for mobile, Roku, and Apple TV.

Three SK-UHD7000-S2 cameras are assigned to a portable flypack; one is installed in the studio alongside the SK-HD1000 systems. The center operates field cameras in 1080p and has licensed one studio SK-UHD7000-S2 for 4K to test UHD workflows ahead of a broader infrastructure transition. The SK-UHD7000-S2 can be upgraded from 1080p to native 4K/UHD via software license.

Our production requirements can change considerably from one project to the next, says David Garraway, Director, University Television Center and Associate Director, Office of Public Affairs, Mississippi State University. We may move from a concert or Christmas parade to a graduation, brand launch or annual meeting. The SK-UHD7000-S2 cameras give us the 1080p acquisition for streaming and video board productions, along with a software-upgradeable path to 4K as our infrastructure evolves. The ability to control the cameras over Ethernet has become an important part of our venue-to-control-room workflow. We can place the cameras and CCUs where the event is taking place, use the university fiber network for transport, and operate from our established control room across campus.

The center uses the SK-UHD7000-S2's SDI and Ethernet trunking to simplify field deployments, including running return video, accessory power, and remote camera control for a secondary box camera over a single SMPTE fiber camera chain. For larger events, MSU routes camera heads and control units to venues up to 2.5 miles away while production personnel work from the Television Center control room.

The center's two SK-HD1000 cameras, now in their 17th year of continuous studio operation, inform how MSU plans equipment replacement cycles. Similar models used by MSU Athletics remain active in field production.

Seventeen years later, the SK-HD1000 cameras are still part of our daily studio operation, Garraway adds. Our migration plan is based on the progress of production technology and our future workflow requirements. As funding permits, we will add two more SK-UHD7000-S2 cameras and ultimately operate three in the studio and three in our field production systems.
