More on Lewitt Microphones Project 1040

A few months ago, SOS were invited to the Lewitt microphone company's headquarters in Vienna to take a first look at a secret prototype microphone called Project 1040', and a 3D-printed prototype was subsequently shown at the Winter NAMM show in January, in celebration of the company's first decade in business. According to Lewitt, The system is intended to deliver the ultimate studio microphone' capable of any imagined or required sound character, dialled in from the control room in real time.

In essence, the system comprises a relatively conventional microphone body - similar to that of the LCT 940 - combined with an all-new power supply/controller. These elements can be used together or separated, for example with the mic and PSU in the studio and the controller in the control room, connected via a standard XLR cable.

Building on a sound preference' survey and in extensive consultation with studio professionals, Lewitt have developed sophisticated new configurable tube circuitry for the system, which provides four primary sound colours: Clear, Warm, Saturated and Dark. A FET circuit is also included, and the outputs from the FET and tube stages can be blended for even more tonal variation. Other controls select polar patterns and various high-pass filter and pad options.

We were impressed with the sound quality and sonic versatility of the prototype Project 1040, and it seems interest is very high, too. We'll bring you more news on pricing and availability (and a full review) as soon as we can.
