Meet the Bryan Brothers: Tips from Golf's Trick Shot Artists

In March 2014, the GoPro UGC team saw a golfing video on YouTube like they'd never seen before. Brothers George and Wesley Bryan filmed a series of golf trick shots that defied logic, showcasing the pair shooting hoops using a wedge and smashing shots from mid-air in the dark. Six months after we first spotted the trick shot duo, the brothers released a 100% GoPro edit gave our viewers a whole new perspective on the notoriously stuffy game of golf.

Fast forward to today, and we're proud to announce that the Bryan Brothers have officially joined the GoPro family as our first official Golf athletes! George and Wesley have become masters of using the GoPro HERO4 to capture their golfing magic and continue to surprise us with their creative shots.

Between tee offs this week, we had the chance to sit down and interview the brothers about how they use GoPro in golf.

GoPro: How did you get your start in the sport?

George: Our dad was a golf pro so we grew up going to golf courses in Columbia, South Carolina with him and naturally picked up the game.

GoPro: How did you get connect with GoPro?

Wesley: We were watching ESPN one day and saw that these two high school kids put out a video that got 1 million views and was the number one play on Sports Center, so we decided that we would go out and try it. We started with an iPhone straight up and down and then we got a GoPro and started using it to produce videos.

George: After we posted a couple videos online, JoshCurrie, from GoPro's UCG team found our video and reached out to us. At first, I thought it was a prank, but it turned out really awesome!

GoPro: How has the relationship with GoPro affected your lives, careers and trajectory in golf?

Welsey: First off, our videos on the GoPro YouTube page have over two and a half million views combined and thats two and half million people that wouldn't have otherwise seen our videos.

George: We were getting success before, but it took us to the next level and introduced us to a new audience. We were just messing around on Instagram and had six thousand followers and then GoPro tagged us in a 15 second clip and a few days later we were up to 15,000 followers. The power of social media that GoPro has offered us has been huge!

Wesley: GoPro believed in us from the first phone call and six months later it actually came to life.

GoPro: How do you mount the GoPro to get the best shot?

Wesley: We try to put them as close to the action as possible. Where ever the ball is going to be deflecting off of so you can see the ball coming towards the camera and then redirected back at us. Everyone loves the point of view, so the Head Mount has been pretty cool because it gives the whole perspective either from my perspective or George's.

George: We also use the Jaws Flex Clamp to mount it to anything within a ten-foot radius, which could be a ball washer or golf cart.

GoPro: Do you have any favorite modes or resolutions?

George: 1080p30 or 1080p60 for anytime we dont want to do slow motion shots. My favorite mode came from the new update, 720p240, when you get it down in post to 8% of the speed, and you see the ball floating through the air and everything looks so smooth.

Wesley: We were going to get an iPhone6 so we could have the 240fps but about a week before I was going to pull the trigger on that, GoPro came out with the update.

GoPro: How long do you typically have to practice a trick shot?

Wesley: Honestly, we practice our real golf game more since we are professionals first. People assume we practice these tricks shots all day everyday but we just get together and play around juggling.

George: The only practice you see is the what's on film. Honestly thats our practice.

GoPro: What advice would you give to an everyday user on how to use GoPro to capture your golf experience?

George: There's no right or wrong way to do it. We just mess around with the settings and find out what works best for us. Be creative and dont think too hard about it. Play around with photos and video. Get a little risky with the GoPro, play around with the sun exposure or try putting it in unconventional places. Dont over produce it and try too hard.

Wesley: Golf is now a social activity and now people are documenting their life more then ever. When you leave to go to the Golf course you grab your clubs, your wallet, your keys and your GoPro. Its the best way to document every day life on the weekends.
