Summer has been slow to arrive in Boston this year, but today is 6/17 in the 617, marking a sonic start to the season. And there's no better way to kick things off than with Dear Summer Mixtape Vol. 3, a playlist dropped today by Mayor Michelle Wu and the Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment. The project features contributions from Berklee artists, DJs, and production talent.
Berklee student Amani Cain (DJ Brat Attack) is one of six Boston-based DJs mixing the project. Stream it now to hear tracks from Aniy , Kyle Ray, Leia, Lauren Jean, and Rijah, with production by Adalia Martin. The mixtape also features interludes from Dr. Emmett G. Price III, dean of Africana Studies; Latoya Lee, director of industry relations; and Terri Lyne Carrington, founder and artistic director of the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
When I think about Boston and summertime, I reflect back on being a kid, making that trek once a week to Berklee for my drum lessons. And later in my teens, playing in all the jazz clubs, says Carrington, who grew up in Medford. I proudly come from a lineage of great Boston drummers . . . so Boston has always been culturally rich, and from what I can see, the talent keeps on coming.
