MTVG Edge, the production-services supplier's software-based production solution, is a main component of the workflow
League One Volleyball (LOVB) is back for its sophomore season with a bolstered production and operations backbone. Solidifying media-rights deals for linear distribution of its Game of the Week broadcast on USA Network and livestreaming on ESPN+ and Victory+, the young league brought in both Omaha Productions and Mobile TV Group (MTVG) to strengthen its infrastructure. On the operations side, Mobile TV Group is riding with a two-pronged approach: onsite mobile units for the larger shows, remote productions with MTVG Edge from its Mountain Media Center in Centennial, CO.
LOVB Taps Mobile TV Group To Accommodate Specific Requests
During the offseason, LOVB began conversations with companies that would be able to back up the plan for its second season. The proposals garnered immediate interest, sparking internal discussion about the right fit for the job.
We put our package up for bid last fall, and 10 companies responded, says Tom Feuer, executive producer, LOVB. All the bids were very compelling and well-thought-out. It shows the depth of the broadcast industry that this many companies would have the resources to pull this off during the busiest time of the year.
Primarily, LOVB sought the ability to handle a large number of both linear and livestreamed games. Linear games, which require facilities in an onsite compound and a team capable of producing matches at a large scale, was a significant priority. Stream games, which comprise the bulk of the league's games during any given week and are played in cities across the country, needed the proper stability and commitment. A proven track record and ability to handle a full season's worth of games elevated MTVG to the top of the list.
The economics were very challenging to provide a level of production our telecast partners, fans, and sponsors would find engaging and informative, says Feuer. MTVG, under the aegis of [Head of Operations] Melinda Wright and [VP, Edge] Don McKinney created a bespoke production workflow for streaming that worked within our parameters, budget, and quality.
In addition, many people at League One Volleyball have close ties to either Mobile TV Group or its employees. For example, while serving as executive producer at FOX Sports West, Feuer worked with then intern and now MTVG CEO Nick Garvin. And Wright and Nick's father, MTVG founder and Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer Phil Garvin, were instrumental in supplying mobile units and other ancillary technologies that brought broadcasts to that section of the nation.
The quality of the service that they provided our region stuck with me all those years, adds Feuer. They're so good and so conscientious that our level of comfort was there from the beginning. Plus, Nick is like his dad: constantly tinkering, innovating, and making production workflows better and smoother.
Remote Productions: MTVG Edge Supports Small Crew
Long known as a reliable mobile-services provider, MTVG, in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, has accelerated efforts in cloud-based and software-based solutions. First, its work with Cloud Control enabled many regional sports networks to continue producing games with health and safety in mind. Since then, the company has responded to the industry's need to remain agile, scalable, and adaptable to increasing productions throughout the year while remaining cost-effective, and MTVG Edge has become the company's go-to solution for remote production.
For LOVB matches, this workflow is the conduit between the league's venues and Mobile TV Group's facility outside Denver. We've deployed a handful of camera flypacks that move from event to event, Garvin explains. We feed the signal back to our Media Operations Center, where we have about a half dozen Edge production rooms.
MTVG Edge links LOVB's venues to the provider's Mountain Media Center.Livestreaming allows a smaller production crew, and Feuer credits MTVG Edge as well as his team's knack for working on the fly to produce these matches. It's a very small crew and a very small margin of error to pull these shows off. Fortunately, the teamwork on problem-solving in the moment has been exceptional and inspirational.
At Mobile TV Group, the team responsible for this solution includes, in addition to Wright and McKinney, Directors, Engineering, Dan Murrie and Travis Sulzener. At League One Volleyball, Feuer is joined by fellow producers Michael Shames, Louise Story, Scott Ferrier, and Lori Brooks; director Brett Lancaster; graphics operators Mike Ryan and Andrew Mangiona; and the versatile Seth Biley and David Hasselfeld filling many positions for matches on MTVG Edge. At the top, the league's production and operations strategy is anchored by Head of Operations Lillie Junker; Brand and Creative Director Patrick Cox; Creative Director Julia Neiva; Senior Manager, Postproduction, Noah Snyder; and producer Rich Allard.
Game of the Week Deploys Onsite Truck, Crewing From Omaha Productions
One complication of the LOVB season is the tour's rotating stops for the Game of the Week on USA Network, and coordination is essential in all aspects of the show. Mobile TV Group takes one thing off LOVB's plate, assigning a mobile unit based in the host city's specific region. The trucks route video feeds to the Mountain Media Center for distribution.
On the crewing side, Omaha Productions - the Peyton Manning-backed broadcast entity known for shows like Monday Night Football With Peyton and Eli and non-live-content series like WWE: Unreal - offers onsite production personnel and production guidance.
