Female Nepali Students Create GoPro Film Reel

Born and raised in Silicon Valley, Wolf Price grew up surrounded by the influences of art, technology, frontier markets, film, and photography. His parents were both photographers so, by no surprise, he landed his first gig at the age of 16 and has pursued his passion up to this day. Wolf has traveled extensively for 10 years, calling places home all across Europe, Central America, and Asia while he documented everything he came across. Early in his traveling career, Wolf chose to create a unique expression as a documentarian while capturing the moments people shared with him. Today, Wolf focuses his efforts on working with the Women of Nepal and the Beyond the Four Walls organization. He supports the members of the community by creating safe havens for women while continuing to make a documentary.

Beyond the Four Walls is an organization that directly helps young women in Nepal by providing access to education and career placement. With help from global donations, the organization is able to offer a community space for women to work and learn together. GoPro sat down with Wolf Price to learn more ...

How have you been using GoPro to document the Beyond the Four Walls project in Nepal?

Since 2012, Ive been bringing my GoPro to Nepal and the results have always been incomparable to other cameras. GoPro has a unique style that allows me to capture adventures all over the country, whether I'm mounting the camera to my motorcycle or sticking it to the roof of a public bus. GoPro allows me to capture the unbelievable roads, trails and views that are seen all over Nepal, sometimes only in short glimpses. Most importantly, GoPro is a tool to teach immersive POV documentary filmmaking to the students in our program.

What has been your favorite way to mount the GoPro?

Back in February 2012, I used a wrist mount to attach the GoPro to a stick. I then gave it to a group of girls from a simple isolated village who had never used a camera before. The simplicity of the GoPro camera and ease of use allowed the girls to immediately understand the process of filmmaking. They started acting out action movies by taking turns filming each other kicking and punching the air. From this point forward I saw the potential to use GoPro cameras as a way to teach filmmaking.

How has GoPro become an educational tool for your students?

Back at my technology resource center, I assigned the students to take GoPro cameras into the old world heritage sites around the city to capture different images and perspectives. After capturing video or time-lapse, they came back to the classroom and I would show the footage right away so they could watch the editing process and see their results shortly after filming. This is a truly unique teaching opportunity because students can take the cameras out themselves and capture their own POV. The durable and light weight nature of the GoPro makes it so I dont need to worry about the students dropping or breaking the GoPro, like I may experience with another camera.

What makes GoPro so unique as a filmmaker?

GoPro has enriched my documentary, as I was able to film things I wouldn't otherwise be able to capture as a foreigner. One of my local Nepali friends always used my GoPro to shoot and explained it best because the camera is so small and compact people don't know when they were being filmed, allowing them to be true to themselves, acting normal and happy. He was able to make people more comfortable on camera than a foreigner would be able to, really capturing amazing moments.
