Lightware's MX2 series is the industry's largest portfolio of standalone matrix switchers, delivering robust performance for demanding live production environments. The flagship MX2-48x48-HDMI20-A-R supports uncompressed 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 video at 18Gbps and ultra-low latency switching, making it ideally suited for large-scale events that require multi-source signal management. For touring applications, the compact MX2-16x16-HDMI20-R delivers the same full 4K UHD 60 Hz performance with predictable signal switching in a transport-friendly form factor.
Rental and staging (R) editions are purpose-built for the demands of live production, featuring redundant power supply options and reinforced connectivity. In environments where equipment is frequently transported, and connected and disconnected, this enhanced resilience ensures consistent operation during demanding touring schedules.
The benefits of utilising traditional matrices in the touring market are numerous. Networked AV systems often require complex configuration for each show, increasing setup time and the need for specialist staff, explains Tam s Lehel. By contrast, a matrix switcher is simple and intuitive: connect the inputs and outputs, power it on, and the system is ready to go. This allows crews to focus on other production priorities.
This has been demonstrated across many high-profile live productions worldwide. London's Royal Ballet and Opera selected the MX2-16x16-HDMI20 to support consistent projection performance across its demanding programme schedule, while during Teddy Swims' recent sold-out UK and Europe tour, the MX2-8x8-HDMI20 delivered steady video distribution of multiple 4K video sources.
Matrix switchers will continue to play an important role in signal management for years to come, especially where simplicity, reliability and cost efficiency remain key advantages, confirms Tam s Lehel. While larger infrastructures are moving towards networked solutions, matrices continue to offer an ever-popular and dependable foundation for live production workflows.
