RT Prime Time report into the National Ambulance Service to air tonight

More than 30 women report allegations of sexual harassment, misogyny and bullying within National Ambulance Service

Tonight on RT Prime Time, 9:35pm, RT One and RT Player

More than 30 women have told RT Prime Time they experienced or witnessed sexual harassment, misogyny, bullying and intimidation while working in the National Ambulance Service.

The women who spoke to RT journalist Aisling Kenny include current and former paramedics and emergency medical technicians. Many spoke anonymously because they continue to work in the service.

Tonight's report features them describing experiences from their initial training through to their careers on the road, with some saying they felt unable to complain because of the potential impact on their careers.

Barbara* told RT Prime Time a male National Ambulance Service colleague behaved inappropriately towards her during the early stages of her career. He had that power over me and he knew that he had that power because I was not going to get through my internship year unless he signed me off.

Aoife*, who has since left her role, alleged that a senior colleague touched her inappropriately. When she raised the prospect of reporting it, she said she was told You're wasting your time even reporting it, because nobody's going to do anything, and he'll do it again because he's done it before. She said she felt she was given no support.

David Hall, a former member of the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council, described the National Ambulance Service as historically male-dominated, with a semi-militaristic structure and an unhealthy culture of dominance .

The women who spoke to Prime Time said they continue to value the work of the National Ambulance Service and the role paramedics play in responding to people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives but they said their experiences had left them questioning careers they had once regarded as a calling.

Watch Prime Time tonight on RT One and RT Player at 9:35pm and read the full report by Aisling Kenny and produced by Tara Peterman on RT .ie/primetime.
