Europe is unlikely to see WarnerMedia's new streaming service HBO Max until 2021.

Following confirmation of the streamer's May 2020 launch in the US, it's since been revealed that Europe will see a localised version sometime the following year.

Speaking at HBO Max's launch event, WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey said some markets will get their own localised version of the service. But in other cases, it plans to expand by leaning on our licensing relationships with key partners in territories where we believe market conditions warrant a different approach.

Stankey said the HBO Max international expansion plans will refine themselves over the course of the next year, adding that the nature of the offering will be scaled down and the subscription rate will be at a lower price than in the US.

WarnerMedia is predicting that once HBO Max is fully launched across Europe, the US and Latin America, it will have 75-90 million subscribers by 2025.

Questions remain over whether UK viewers will have access to the service due to Sky's confirmation that it has extended its programming deals with HBO and Warner Bros across its European markets.

Sky Studios will now also work with the HBO Max programming team to produce premium drama and scripted entertainment for Sky and HBO customers across Europe and beyond, as part of a multi-year co-production deal.
