The annual Slum Film Festival (SFF), which runs from 23 to 29 August in Kibera and Mathare in Kenya, is a platform featuring stories by filmmakers from slums in Africa and beyond. It is also an opportunity to show a range of films within slum communities which have limited or no access to cinema. The festival is a joint project hosted by Slum-TV and The Hot Sun Foundation, and supported by World Friends, the Royal African Society, and the Embassy of Spain (Kenya), and the Alliance Fran aise.

This year s festival also acts as a skills building platform for filmmakers, who are invited to participate in a number of intensive filmmaking labs.

The festival will offer awards to outstanding films in the following categories:

1. Best Contemporary African Film

2. Best Documentary Film

3. Best Short Film (narrative)

4. Best Community News Piece

5. Judges Choice Award

6. People s Choice Award

7. Best Original Screenplay

In addition, SFF will offer a trophy, a certificate and prizes in cash or in-kind awards.

Submissions:

Deadline for early bird submissions: 30 June 2015

Deadline for late submissions: 30 July 2015 (A late submission fee of US$30 is required)

The maximum length per film is 30 minutes, and should speak positively of key issues affecting people living in slums and other informal settlements. The films should make a strong positive social statement.

Entrants may submit three films as an individual. This does not prohibit individuals from being involved in other submitted films, except as the director.

A separate entry form must be completed for each film.

Submitted short films must have been completed after 31 June 2013.

Any subtitles must be embedded into the film.

For postal entries the film must be submitted as a .MOV on a USB memory stick, DVD or CD. For online entries, a link to a YouTube/Vimeo/other website must be made available. For online entries, shortlisted films may be requested at a later date as an MP4 on a USB.

For the duration of the festival, shortlisted filmmakers are kindly urged not to post their films on YouTube or Vimeo.

Entrants agree that any still image from the film submitted may be used for promotional purposes. Entrants may choose the still image that is used for promotional purposes. If an entrant wishes to do this, they will need to send the image as a JPEG, PNG or GIF to slumfilmfestival@gmail.com.

All applicants are requested to supply a film poster (in PDF or JPEG format, A3 portrait).

The Slum Film festival judges reserve the right to exclude from the festival any short films that they decree incite violence or bigotry (this does not mean that the films cannot contain violence).

Submitted films will be entered into those categories chosen by the entrant.

Entrants of shortlisted films agree that their submitted films can be included in a Festival DVD, for sale to the general public, the proceeds of which will be invested in future festival editions.

SFF does not charge entry fees for any of its screenings nor does it charge film entry fee.
