From Alcatraz to an Olympics Handoff at Midfield, NBC Sports Expands Super Bowl Pregame Into Bay Area-Wide Celebration

Broadcasters continue to raise the bar when it comes to producing an eye-catching pregame show

For decades, Super Bowl Sunday has been more than just a championship football game. It has become a cultural broadcast marathon that begins long before kickoff.

Broadcasters across eras have treated the day as an all-afternoon event, with extended pregame specials that build narrative, context, and anticipation for the game itself. What once amounted to a short preview window has evolved into hours of live television that frame the sport's biggest moment.

For Super Bowl LX, the broadcaster will produce a five-hour live pregame show spanning multiple locations across the San Francisco Bay Area, feeding into halftime and postgame studio coverage and culminating in a live transition to NBCUniversal's Winter Olympics primetime broadcast from midfield at Levi's Stadium.

When we started working on this Super Bowl, one of the concepts was to make not just the stadium but all of Northern California part of the tapestry - and a character in the broadcast, says NBC Sports Coordinating Producer Pierre Moosa, who is serving as lead producer for the studio coverage. What was awesome about this is that we had a group of people who were so passionate about the opportunity. Any crazy idea that came up, we all talked together and came up with creative ways to do it.

That creative vision underpins one of the most complex pregame productions NBC Sports has ever built: a distributed, multi-site studio operation designed to treat the Bay Area itself as a live-production campus.
