AAFF a platform for showing and distributing African films --

The Arusha African Film Festival (AAFF) takes place from 20 to 27 September 2014 at Alliance Francaise, Via Via cultural cafe, the Natural History Museum and the New Arusha Hotel in Tanzania.

The festival features films by local, regional and international filmmakers, a workshop programme and cultural performances. As a member of the East African Film Festival Network (EAFN), AAFF also awards East African filmmakers for the best films dealing with East African integration.

In line with the theme for 2014, Youth Engagement and Socio Cultural Integration in Africa, AAFF showcases movies from around the world which tell stories of African people in an initiative to better understand the continent.

Festival Manager, Mary Birdi said, Africans have vast resources of stories and experiences, and they need cinematic outlets like the AAFF to expose them.

David Charles, northern zone director for festival sponsor Tigo Tanzania commented The film industry has evolved from simply providing entertainment to being a source of employment to the youth. We believe the AAFF is a good platform for the local film actors and producers to come forward and showcase their talents and Tanzanian culture to the wider audience.

He added, We believe that supporting such initiatives, the film industry in Tanzania will eventually grow to its full potential; create more employment opportunities to more and younger people who aspire to become actors, directors and producers; as well as a platform for exporting our culture especially our language Swahili. It is indeed an excellent way of promoting Tanzania internationally.

In addition to screenings, a number of workshops and seminars will take place which are focused on filmmaking in Africa, youth engagement, sociocultural integration, and how these aspects influence socio-economic advancement in communities. Delegates from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, which are all member states of the East African community (EAC), participate in the sessions.

Festival Director of AAFF, Akpor Otebele commented, I would like to invite all lovers of films from Tanzania and the rest of Africa to join us at the Arusha African Film Festival from Saturday 20th to Saturday 27th September in celebrating the great stories of Africa through the works of local and international filmmakers.
