HEDD Audio unveil the Type 40 System

New modular full-range monitoring system arrives

Following a few weeks of teasers, HEDD Audio have just revealed the latest addition to their high-end monitoring line-up, the Type 40 System. Comprising two units, the Type 40 Main and the Type 40 XTD, the new arrival is a modular system that has been designed for studio users who are in search of more power and low-frequency extension, but want to avoid the complexities that can come with installing a traditional large-format system.

Each system centres around the Type 40 Main, a sealed three-way monitor that houses a 10.75-inch woofer, a pair of four-inch midrange drivers and HEDD's AMT tweeter. It's capable of delivering full-range performance on its own - despite its relatively compact size, it measures just -3dB down at 20Hz - but can be combined with up to three Type 40 XTD cabinets per channel, each of which introduces an additional 10.75-inch woofer. Given the response of the main unit, the primary purpose of the XTD cabinets isn't to extend the system's low-frequency response, but rather to increase headroom.

It's not just additional power thats on offer, though. Thanks to a removable plate on the front panel, the Type 40 XTD can operate either as a ported or sealed cabinet, and it's also possible to mount one or more of the extension cabinets in rear-facing orientation and configure the system as a cardioid array. Depending on how the system is set up, HEDD say that this option allows for up to a 10dB reduction in SPL behind the system, while a full stack of three XTD cabinets paired with a Type 40 Main offers up to 15dB of additional headroom compared to using the Main cabinet alone.

Onboard DSP handles the likes of driver time-alignment and phase correction, and three modes of operation are provided: Zero Phase corrects amplitude and phase response; Flat retains frequency-response correction but without applying phase linearisation; and Off bypasses both to provide the lowest possible latency for tracking. As you'd imagine, everything can be controlled and configured remotely from HEDD's CTRL software.

The system can be placed horizontally on stands or hung with compatible mounting hardware (the cabinets are fitted with M10 threaded mounting points), and for those wishing to integrate the system into a soffit, it's possible to remove the amplifier from the rear panel and mount it remotely.
