MASV Outlines Seven-Step Sports Analytics Workflow, Highlights File Transfer as Key Bottleneck

MASV, a managed file transfer platform used in broadcast and live sports production, has published a guide to the modern sports video analytics workflow, identifying file transfer as the most significant operational bottleneck between game capture and actionable analysis.

The guide breaks the workflow into seven steps: video and data collection, ingest and organization, transfer, processing and encoding, analysis, distribution, and archiving.

Capture and Ingest

Modern professional venues deploy multi-angle camera setups including endzone cameras, sideline rigs, all-22 film views, and IP-connected 4K PTZ cameras, with some NFL and NBA venues using volumetric video systems requiring more than 100 4K cameras. A typical NFL game produces multiple terabytes of raw data; volumetric capture can reach tens of terabytes. Footage formats include MXF, MOV, and MP4 containers encoded with ProRes 422 HQ, H.264, or HEVC. Teams also collect player tracking data from wearable technology and optical systems such as Hawk-Eye, Kinexon Sports, and Second Spectrum.

Transfer

The guide identifies off-site file delivery as the step where most sports analytics workflows face the greatest challenges. MASV's Growing Files feature allows video coordinators to begin uploading footage while recording is still in progress, enabling remote analytics staff to begin working on first-half footage before the second half ends. The guide also covers MASV Multiconnect channel bonding, which combines multiple internet connections simultaneously, and MASV Portals for standardized scout footage uploads.

Processing and Analysis

After transfer, footage is transcoded, multi-camera feeds are synchronized to a common timestamp, sensor and tracking data are integrated, and footage is clipped, segmented, and tagged. Platforms commonly used in this stage include Hudl, Catapult, ScorePlay, Dartfish, and custom internal tools. Analysis spans tactical breakdowns, opponent tendency analysis, player efficiency ratings, load management, and advanced metrics including expected goals and win probability models.

Distribution and Archiving

Finished clip packages and scouting reports are distributed in different formats for coaches, players, front offices, and sport scientists. The guide recommends a combination of hot and cold cloud storage for archiving, with hot storage for frequently accessed footage and cold storage - including AWS Glacier and Standard IA tiers - for legacy data.
