Radio France Internationale (RFI) has taken delivery of an NTP Technology DAD AX32 analog/digital/analog audio signal converter for integration into the broadcast production system at its headquarters in Paris. The AX32 is already in successful operation with regular music broadcasts as part of RFI s continuous radio transmission schedule and on the associated Monte-Carlo Doualiya (MCD) channel. RFI negotiated the purchase via NTP Technology s French master reseller, Areitec.

"The AX32 is being used as an interface between our Solid State Logic AWS 900 analog sound console and an Avid Pro Tools post-production workstation," comments Xavier Gibert, Head of Audio Engineering at RFI. "We chose the DAD AX32 for the transparency of the conversion which preserves the smooth analog quality of the AWS 900 and peripheral equipment. The reliability we already knew and flexibility of the internal routing was an additional consideration in validating our choice."

RFI and MCD music productions include two daily programmes, Tropical Colours and Bandwidth and two weekly programmes, World Music and Music Hour .

RFI is a French public radio service that broadcasts in Paris and all over the world. It is one of the most listened to international radio stations in the world, along with BBC World Service, Voice of America and Deutsche Welle. RFI broadcasts 24 hours per day across the world in French and in 12 other languages in FM, shortwave, medium wave, cable, on Worldspace and online at www.rfi.fr. It is a channel of the state company, France M dias Monde, alongside France24 and MCD.

Housed in a compact 2U chassis, the NTP Technology DAD AX32 is designed for use in no-compromise audio recording and mixing as well as post-production. Large multi-microphone arrays can be accommodated without the need to transport a second processor. Up to 48 microphone feeds can be connected back to the control room along a single Cat 5 cable via fully transparent and uncompressed IP Ethernet. The optional microphone preamplifier provides up to 72 decibels of gain, 123 dB dynamic range and an equivalent noise floor of -133 dB. The AX32 comes as standard with an interface for Avid Pro Tools and eight AES/EBU and MADI inputs and outputs. It can optionally be fitted with a Dante IP audio interface and two optical MADI interfaces.

The DX32 is a digital audio bridge and router interface designed for applications such as multi-room recording studios, post-production facilities and audio distribution installations. It allows all digital input and output routing to be managed within a single unit or a combination of units. With near zero latency, the DX32 can be used to expand I/O channel count and interface digital components, providing a high quality bridge between AES/EBU, MADI, Avid Pro Tools HDX and the Dante IP audio network.

At its core, the DX32 is a 384 x 384 router which can patch any input to any one or more outputs on a mono channel basis. Sampling rates of up to 384 kilohertz and Super Audio CD formats such as Direct Stream Digital are supported. In its interface role, the DX32 provides up to 192 channels on one electrical MADI I/O port and two optical ports, 64 channels on Avid Pro Tools HDX, 16 AES/EBU channels and 64 channels on Ethernet Layer 3 using Audinate Dante IP audio technology.

The AX32 and DX32 have identical audio processors. The AX32 frame can additionally be equipped with analog and 3G SDI audio cards.
