Ahead of a new WRAL Documentary airing Thursday, you can attend a free screening of the WRAL Documentary Unsafe: North Carolina Kids Dying on Tuesday in Raleigh.
In conjunction with Transfer Co. Food Hall and the Live Like Jenesis Project, the event will include a panel discussion with local leaders about the importance of secure firearm storage.
In UnSafe: North Carolina Kids Dying from Gun Violence, WRAL Investigative Documentary Reporter Cristin Severance and Documentary Photojournalist Dwayne Myers shed light on the devastating impacts of gun violence through the deeply personal story of one family's loss.
Gun violence kills more young people in the U.S. than any other cause. The WRAL Documentary Unit set out to uncover why kids in North Carolina are 51% more likely to die from gun violence compared to children in the United States as a whole, according to statistics from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
North Carolina has 10 of the top 100 U.S. cities for reports of gun thefts from vehicles. In 2022, more than 2,500 guns were stolen from vehicles throughout the state - and Raleigh is no exception to this alarming trend.
Firearms are now the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina. NC S.A.F.E. wants to teach North Carolinians how taking simple steps, like locking your firearms, can make communities safer and avoid preventable tragedies.
The goal of NC S.A.F.E. is to reduce gun theft, suicide attempts, youth violence and increase the safety of North Carolina families and their communities. The statewide initiative is designed to raise awareness of the importance of safe firearm storage by providing resources on best practices for firearm storage and safety.
The free screening starts at 6 p.m. at the Transfer Co. Food Hall ballroom at 500 E. Davie Street. You can find more information about effectively and safely securing your guns at ncsafe.org.
New WRAL Doc this week: Easy Targets Coming Thursday, the WRAL Documentary Unit investigates the growing gang problem in North Carolina in their latest documentary, Easy Targets: Gangs Getting Younger in NC. This film uncovers the types of gangs operating in the state, the crimes they're committing, and how a recent change in North Carolina law is making it easier for gangs to recruit children.
You can watch Easy Targets on WRAL-TV at 7:30 p.m. on June 6, 2024, or stream it on wraldoc.com. It will also be available on the WRAL Docs YouTube page beginning at 8 p.m. on June 6, 2024.
