How to Shop Well Now starts Monday at 9.35pm

On the eve of the announcement of Budget 2027, journalist Claire Brock and author and content creator Sophie Morris go behind supermarket shelves to reveal the hidden forces driving up food costs and discover how consumers can shop smarter.
How To Shop Well Now, a two-part documentary series, delves into Ireland's shopping baskets to discover the truth behind the rising cost of groceries. The series starts this Monday at 9.35pm on RT One and RT Player.
With the average annual grocery bill for an Irish family-of-four up by as much as 3,000* per year when compared to 2020, Claire Brock and Sophie Morris look at how Ireland's supermarket system works and how consumers can shop better.
Claire examines supermarket psychology and learns a series of tricks and tips to help shoppers navigate the aisles. From on-line shopping to loyalty card schemes, she discovers how Ireland shops, and wonders if consumers can shop more smartly?
Sophie Morris usually posts online about what she finds in supermarkets but in this series she goes beyond the shop-floor to meet the people behind the products. Sophie encounters a number of food producers from across Ireland to find out how they are managing the rising cost of supplying Ireland's most shopped-for products.
From beef to chocolate, the series looks at the volatility impacting what consumers are currently paying for the foods they love. As an island nation, Ireland exports around 90%** of the food it grows and produces and it imports up to 80%*** of the food consumed here. Vulnerable to climate change and geopolitics, this series looks at the security of Ireland's food system and asks if there is a need for systemic change.
