London, September 10th, 2014 - Farncombe, a leading provider of specialist technology and operational services, has been appointed by Eutelsat Communications to support the development of Eutelsat's Push Video-on-Demand (VOD) services using the HbbTV v2.0 standard. These new Push VOD services give broadcasters a practical and standardised way to optimise bandwidth for VOD services.
Farncombe was selected for the overall project management, software development and integration services because of its in-depth understanding of the HbbTV standard, expertise in technical support and integration services.
Farncombe has been involved in developing the HbbTV specification for a number of years. Push VOD functionalities have now been added to the latest version of the HbbTV standard which will be published later this year and is expected to be standardised by ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute) in early 2015. By integrating Push VOD into HbbTV, broadcasters and users will benefit from faster and easier adoption of interactive services and smarter bandwidth use.
We chose to partner with Farncombe because of their previous track record working with us as well as their experience with HBBTV and their system architecture capabilities, said Nicolas Moulin Fournier, head of Connected TV Programme, Eutelsat. The team at Farncombe has proven yet again that they have the project management skills and technical expertise to ensure the delivery of even the most complex projects.
Eutelsat will demonstrate its end-to-end HbbTV-based Push VOD system at IBC 2014 Hall 1, stand D.59. The system demonstrated at IBC protects the content with Marlin DRM from Intertrust to enable different models of monetisation and is also compatible with other DRM solutions.
The technology has been integrated as a demonstrator into the FRANSAT Connect Portal provided by the FRANSAT TV platform and is currently being tested by Arte and NRJ12.
We have supported Eutelsat in a broad range of projects over the years but this particular one presented some interesting challenges because of its ground-breaking use of HbbTV v2.0 technology, said Jean-Marc Racine, managing partner, Farncombe. With the latest set-top boxes featuring terabytes of storage, push VOD gives broadcasters a way to allow users to enjoy the benefits of interactivity by selecting and watching downloaded content as and when they want, immediately with no buffering.
