Fujifilm introduces Virtual Grid Technology with variable Grid Ratios to enhance Image Contrast and Clarity

FUJIFILM Europe Medical Systems Division will introduce a cutting-edge new image processing tool called Virtual Grid at the 21st annual European Congress of Radiology in Vienna, Austria from March 4-8. The latest evolution of the company's digital x-ray advances, Virtual Grid intelligently adapts contrast to improve image quality for examinations taken without a grid. Fujifilm's Virtual Grid results in higher image contrast and clarity for exams that need it most, said Hidetoshi Izawa, European Marketing Manager, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH. This new intelligent processing is designed for exams such as portable chest and abdomen which generate significant levels of scattered radiation but where grids are not always able to be used. Much like using a physical grid, Virtual Grid reduces the effect of scatter to improve the clarity and contrast of images for exams where a grid is not used. Physical add on grids are commonly required for mobile imaging of large anatomy to reduce scatter that would otherwise lead to low contrast, ill-defined images. These physical grids require precise alignment of the tube and detector/grid to avoid both image artifact and degradation. The use of a virtualized rather than physical grid eliminates the possibility of artifacts resulting from misalignment, assuring a high contrast image without the typical workflow drawbacks associated with physical grid use. Virtual Grid processing will be a great benefit to technologists for mobile imaging in emergency room, operating room, bedside, wheel chair and other exams where they may not have the optimal grid or any grid on hand. The Virtual Grid operates by first mapping the effect of scatter upon each image then automatically adapting the processing to replicate grid use and reduce degradation of image quality. This new feature offers automated and selectable grid ratios, making it possible to adapt image quality according to site preferences. As demonstrated in the ECR 2015 EPOS Online Exhibit, Virtual Grid Technology also holds the possibility for dose reduction. Preliminary phantom testing of this new technology indicates that when using a Virtualized grid the same image quality score can be achieved with 50% less dose than when using a Physical Grid. While this potential dose reduction is yet to be verified broadly in a clinical setting, the benefits of Virtual Grid Technology in improving both image quality and workflow in a mobile environment are already apparent.
