Sally Field made history in 1985 with one of the most memorable, and often misquoted, Oscar acceptance speeches, when she won the Best Actress Award for her performance in Places in the Heart . Overwhelmed after winning her second golden statuette, she declared to members of the Oscar and TV-viewing audiences, You like me, right now, you like me! She went on to explain that winning her second award was even more special than her first stating, I haven't had an orthodox career. And I've wanted more than anything to have your respect.

This year, I'll be delivering my first presentation at the 2014 AHIMA Convention in San Diego, CA (#AHIMACon14), titled, Redefining the Role of Health Information Management in the New World of Information Governance . Like all featured speakers, I want my audience to walk away from my session with new insights and practical advice. As a vendor, I feel enormous pressure to ensure my talk isn't seen as too salesy or self-promoting, while at the same time I want to leverage my unique position of working with many healthcare organizations and other industries, as well. So what can you expect to learn during my session?

Well, as the healthcare landscape continues to shift, HIM professionals recognize the need to manage information more strategically, across their organization. While recognizing the need for Information Governance is an important first step, trying to do so while juggling day-to-day responsibilities can be daunting. My presentation is designed to provide practical guidance on how to jump start your journey. By leading the audience through a five-phased roadmap, I hope to demystify the process, introduce some easy-to-follow best practices and provide the knowledge and insights needed to avoid roadblocks and get you headed down the right path to IG success.
