Steampunk Anime Adaptation Leviathan' Takes Flight on July 10

From the creators of BEASTARS and Star Wars: Visions, the highly anticipated steampunk adaptation Leviathan is set to premiere worldwide on July 10. This anime adaptation of Scott Westerfeld's acclaimed novels transports viewers to an alternate 1914, where bioengineered beasts battle mechanical war machines. At the heart of the story are a fugitive prince and a girl in disguise, whose journey aboard a living airship could change the course of history.

Leviathan is a collaboration between Qubic Pictures (Eden, Star Wars: Visions Seasons 1 & 3) and Studio Orange (BEASTARS, Trigun Stampede), blending Western storytelling with Japanese animation in a globe-spanning war epic.

Scott Westerfeld shares his excitement: It's been wonderful to work so closely with Studio Orange and Qubic on this adaptation of Leviathan. Series illustrator Keith Thompson and I have loved watching another layer added to our already weird creation. Walking tanks and flying whales, brought to life with the dynamism of state-of-the-art anime!

The series features an all-star Japanese voice cast, including Ayumu Murase (Haikyu!!, Devilman Crybaby) as Prince Aleksandar "Alek" and Natsumi Fujiwara (Spy x Family, The Orbital Children) as Deryn Sharp. The cinematic original score, composed by Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Metal Gear Solid 4) is complemented by additional original songs from legendary composer Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke), making Leviathan a rare showcase of elite musical talent from both the anime and video game worlds.

Leviathan starts streaming on July 10, only on Netflix.

About Leviathan

Set in a war-torn reimagining of 1914, Leviathan follows Alek, a fugitive prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Deryn Sharp, a daring young girl disguised as a boy to serve in the British Air Service. When fate throws them together aboard the HMS Leviathan, a massive, living airship made from genetically engineered creatures, they embark on a world-changing adventure that will challenge everything they know about war, loyalty, and identity.

Blending sweeping action, high-altitude battles, and emotional storytelling, Leviathan explores how two unlikely teens can rewrite history in a world on the brink of collapse.
